The Souls of China is written by American journalist Ian Johnson. It tells the story of the resurgence of Chinese religion after the Great Cultural Revolution.According to the characteristics of the source text, the author selects eco-translatology theory as the theoretical basis, adopting the translation strategy of "three-dimensional transformation" in the translation process.Under the guidance of the "three-dimensional transformation" strategy of "Eco-translatology",the thesis analyzes and summarizes the English-Chinese translation of the seventh and eighth sections in Chapter Two of The Souls of China. The thesis analyzes some typical cases from three dimensions: language, culture and communication dimensions, and probes into the translator’s adaptive choices according to different difficulties in the process of translation,as well as the translation strategies, methods and techniques adopted. The author finds that the theory of eco-translatology is feasible in guiding the translation of documentary literature related to religious development in China. In terms of language dimension, the author adopts such translation techniques as sub translation, voice conversion and word order adjustment to deal with the differences between the source and the target languages;in terms of culture dimension, the author mainly adopts domestication translation strategy, using techniques as interpretation, annotation to restore Chinese specific terms and religious terms more accurately;in terms of communication dimension, translation techniques such as addition translation and omission translation are mainly used to eliminate communication barriers. The purpose of the thesis is to provide a reference for the application of eco-translatology in the translation of documentary literature related to the development of Chinese religion, which is similar to the Souls of China.
