| As an important coping tactic in simultaneous interpreting(SI),omission as a strategy is being increasingly put under the microscope by researchers.As a result,abundant findings are made regarding the typology,causes and impacts of omission strategies in SI.However,if we take a closer look,we will realize that,so far,researchers have mostly focused on omission strategies in SI without text(pure SI),while those in SI with text(SI+T)has not received the attention it deserves.To some extent,SI+T,which has become increasingly common in international conferences,can be more difficult than pure SI,because in SI+T,the speaker is reading from a pre-written text,which almost always embodies carefully chosen words,complex expressions,and long sentences.When confronted with such a challenge,is it okay for the interpreter to omit certain things like it is usually the case in pure SI? If so,What kind of omission strategies are acceptable? Can the interpreter borrow the omission strategies used in pure SI?These important questions remain unanswered.With these questions in mind,the researcher sets out to conduct a comparative study between pure SI and SI+T products by professional interpreters,so as to answer the following questions:(1)Is using omission as a strategy in SI+T as common as that in pure SI ?(2)Are the omission strategies used in SI+T any different from those in pure SI? If so,what are the differences?(3)What are the possible reasons for using omission as a strategy in SI+T? Are these reasons different from those in pure SI?After the comparative study,the following conclusions have been reached.First,the use of omission as a strategy in SI+T is not as common as that in pure SI.Second,the omission strategies used in SI+T are exactly the same as those in pure SI.Therefore,interpreters working in the SI+T mode can borrow the omission strategies used in pure SI.Third,the reasons for using omission as a strategy in SI+T are slightly different from those in pure SI. |
