The past and contemporary scholars have done a large amount of research work on ellipsis, understatement, hint, transferred epithet, empty category and zero form and their work leaves rich experience for the fulfillment of this thesis. This thesis is to research on the elliptical phenomena in the contemporary Chinese language on the basis of the previous achievements in this field. The author uses the term "Omission of nominal element", trying to cover the related grammatical phenomena extensively and systematically, i.e. ellipsis, understatement and language absence. The author bases her research on large amounts of linguistic facts and gives a detailed analysis from the three aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. First the author states out the character and status of the elliptical phenomena in Chinese language, pointing out the universality of this phenomenon and its great importance comparing with other languages. Secondly the author divides the elliptical phenomenainto two sorts-----compulsory omission phenomenon and non-compulsoryone------ according to the conditions that cause the omissionphenomena. Then the author uses a great number of linguistic facts to analyze and classify the two sorts of omission phenomena, pointing out the differences between them. Thirdly, the author analyzes the main factors that cause the omission phenomena and the way to define the references of the omission elements and so on. In the conclusion part, the author put forward her own opinion about the controversial disputes in the present research world, pointing out the actual existence of omission phenomena in such special structures as "jian yu ju" and "lian dong ju" . In conclusion, this thesis is to link up the three aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics through research on the omission of nominal element. It covers comparatively extensive omission phenomena, thus helps us to discover more and more grammatical phenomena, to reveal more and more grammatical principles and to enhance the Chineselanguage teaching and learning for foreigners and also the development of computational linguistics.
