| The report is based on the translation of Chapter V of Bernard Shaw,one of the masterpieces of the British biographer Michael Holroyd.This biography focuses on the life and dramatic views,creative process,gender relations and political attitude of Bernard Shaw.With fluent language,it presents us with a comprehensive image of Bernard Shaw.In order to make the target readers have a more comprehensive understanding of the subject,the present translation practice pays more attention to the readers’ response to the translation.Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory also pays attention to the response of the target readers.Therefore,in the process of translation and proofreading,Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is used as a guiding theory.According to the guidance of this theory,this report uses different translation methods at the lexical level,the sentence level and the discourse level,so as to solve the various translation problems in the translation process.Firstly,conversion,addition,subtraction,paraphrase and annotation are mainly adopted at the lexical level.Secondly,at the sentence level,sequencing and inversion,division are adopted.Besides,the translation has also been improved by adjustment according to the different linguistic characteristics of Chinese and English—paratactic and hypotactic.Thirdly,at the discourse level,the translation is completed by the improvement according to the context.The language characteristics of the characters are also reproduced as far as possible.Also,through the method of changing perspectives,the translation ensures that the translated text is understandable.This report includes five parts.The first three parts are a description of the translation task,a description of the translation process and an overview of translation theory.The fourth part introduces some cases in the translation process in the light of communicative translation theory.The last part is a conclusion. |
