Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of Words With Chinese Characteristics Based On Skopos Theory

As China’s international influence continues to expand,the international community pays more attention to China’s development.The English translation of the government work report has become an important way for the world to understand China’s policies and social development.Words with Chinese characteristics play a very important role in the government work report,and the English translation quality of them will directly affect the outside world’s cognition of China’s development policies and the effect of China’s publicity.Therefore,how to translate the words with Chinese characteristics in the government work report is particularly important for China’s publicity.Based on Skopos Theory and the translation of Government Work Report of Liaoning Province in 2020,this report analyzes the English translation of words with Chinese characteristics.This report divides the words with Chinese characteristics in the Government Work Report of Liaoning Province in 2020 into three categories: numeral abbreviations,four-character phrases and culture-loaded words,and analyzes the difficulties in the translation of each kind of words,such as inadequate expression,the expression does not conform to the English logical thinking,ambiguous expression and so on.In addition,this report combines the basic principles of Skopos Theory,namely,Skopos principle,coherence principle and fidelity principle,with the translation cases of these words with Chinese characteristics to explore the English translation of words with Chinese characteristics in the government work report,and puts forward some translation methods according to the features of each kind of words,such as explanation translation,literal translation with annotations,literal translation and omission,and concludes that translators should consciously change translation methods in line with different kinds of words with Chinese characteristics so as to ensure the translation be better accepted by the target readers and achieve the translation purpose.This report hopes to be a new enlightenment for the application of Skopos Theory and the English translation of words with Chinese characteristics in the government work report.
