As the core idea of the new curriculum reform,key competencies plays more important role in basic education.It is an urgent need to establish key competencies curriculum system of all disciplines in our country to combine it with specific disciplines and implement it in teaching practice.English subject key competencies are composed of language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.Under the background of vocational students' poor English quality,low interest in English learning,weak language ability,low cultural awareness and set thinking,it is urgent to cultivate the core quality of English of vocational students.However,from the perspective of the practice of vocational English teaching,the current vocational education lacks the concept and development plan of how to cultivate students' English subject key competencies.Therefore,the purpose of this study is to understand the current situation of the cultivation of English subject key competencies in vocational schools,analyze the existing problems and put forward corresponding suggestions.Based on relevant researches on key competencies at home and abroad,and the researches on the connotation and essence of key competencies in English discipline,this paper takes 300 students and 30 English teachers from three vocational schools in Qinghai province as research objects,and questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation research methods are used to explore the following questions:1.What is the current situation of cultivating students' English subject key competencies in vocational schools?2.What are the problems of cultivating students' English subject key competencies in vocational schools ?3.What pedagogical suggestions can be offered to solve the problems?Firstly,focused on the literature review and previous studies,this paper illustrates the specific connotation of key competencies,subject key competencies and English subject key competencies.On this basis,it further explains the specific contents of the core qualities of English(language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality,learning ability).Secondly,we know that the overall development of vocational students' English subject key competencies are unbalanced through thequestionnaire and classroom observation to teachers and students.The results show us that the development of language ability and cultural awareness are better than that of thinking quality and learning ability,but the difference is not obvious.At the same time,through further analysis of the questionnaire,the factors affecting the cultivation of English subject key competencies of vocational schools students are obtained,including textbooks,teachers,students,and teaching evaluation.Finally,the author tries to give suggestions from the four dimensions.
