It is an important task to cultivate students' key competencies of English subject in the process of English teaching in junior high school.As an important teaching carrier in school education,textbooks convey knowledge and key competencies through teachers' teaching and students' learning.And the good discovery and use of English textbooks by teachers has a great influence on the cultivation of students' key competencies of English subject.Therefore,the study of key competencies content in textbook is necessary.Starting from the perspective of key competencies of English subject,a content analysis in this study is conducted in junior high school English textbooks.Through the analysis of the content of PEP junior high school English textbooks,we can explore the expression and distribution of learning ability,language ability,thinking quality and cultural consciousness in junior high school English textbooks.And to achieve the purpose of teachers more effectively cultivating the content of key competences into the process of English teaching.Based on the literature method and text analysis method,this research analyzes the occurrence frequency and percentage of the key competencies of English subject in textbooks as well as its presentation situation in the textbooks for different grades,and draws the following conclusions: The textbooks adopt task-based language teaching method with each unit centering on one topic,are designed from easy to difficult with strong interest,which can present the key competencies of English subject,but textbooks mainly focus on the cultivation of students' language ability and thinking quality but neglect the cultivation of students' cultural consciousness and learning ability,learning ability and cultural consciousness are less distributed in the whole textbooks.Besides,most content of cultural consciousness in textbooks are concentrated on the ninth grade,and concentrated on introducing foreign cultures with less attention to traditional Chinese culture;The content of learning ability are few and relatively outdated;The presentation way of thinking quality content is relatively simple,which can not cultivate students' critical thinking ability well.The content of language competence are distributed discretely in different grades,where in the cultivation of phonetics as well as listening and speaking ability is emphasized in the seventh grade while the cultivation of reading and writing ability is stressed in the eighth and ninth grades.According to the above research results,the following suggestions are proposed: The content of cultural consciousness should increase the knowledge of Chinese traditional culture,cultivate students' awareness of cultural communication and inclusiveness to different cultures;The content of learning ability should keep pace with the times according to different learning stages;The content of thinking ability should focus on diversified presentation way and increase some projects which can cultivate students' critical thinking skills;The content of language competence should base on the students' learning situations in different learning stages.In addition,the teachers should use textbooks and teaching resources flexibly in the teaching process,adjust the content order according to teaching needs and penetrate the key competencies content of English subject into the teaching process.
