| Biography is a kind of common literary genre.Figure biographies mainly reproduce protagonists’ important experiences and stories in their life and personal development.With the further development of globalization,more and more foreign biographies about famous figures come into Chinese people’s view.The translation of biographical literature plays an increasingly important role.Because of discrepancy in culture and linguistic characteristics between China and western nations,the translation of biographies is a challenge for the translator.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator translates the autobiography The Growing Season in this thesis and discusses the application of the theories by virtue of concrete examples.According to Newmark’s elaboration,in the semantic translation,the translator is still based on the source text and explains the meaning of the source text to help target readers understand what the source text expresses while the communicative translation concentrates on the target readers and help readers gets rid of difficulties and obstacles in reading to achieve smooth communicative effect.Under the guidance of semantic translation,this thesis analyzes the translation of terminology,measurement units,proper nouns,slang and polysemic words.Under the guidance of communicative translation,the translation of pronouns,modifiers,emotions,long sentences and static words is discussed in view of Chinese and English linguistic differences.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator has completed the translation of Chapter Ten,Chapter Eleven and Chapter Twelve of The Growing Season.In order to improve the communicative effect of the target text,the translator strives for the readability of the translated version when the accurate meaning of the source text is ensured.It is concluded that semantic translation and communicative translation can be applied in the translation of biographies.It is expected that this thesis can provide beneficial experience for the translation of biographical literature. |
