A Translation Practice Report Of The Forgotten Wife

This paper aims to explore the guiding role of functional equivalence theory in the translation of suspense novels.The preface,chapters I,II,and IV of the book The Forgotten Wife are selected as the translation object.The author of the original is Lorna Cook,a British female writer.The novel was first published in 2019 by Avon,a division of Harper Collins Publishers Ltd.The original is a suspense novel,mainly about two heroines’ legendary experiences,reveals the warmth of love and the dark human nature.The book has the color of suspense but also has the essential characteristics of bestsellers.The original text’s translation will help readers understand the essential elements of suspense novels,the basic characteristics of bestsellers and help readers understand the different history,culture,society,and humanity of China and the West.The translation practice began in June 2019 and ended in December 2019,which lasted six months.8,722 English words were translated,and 14,763 Chinese characters were obtained.Nida’s functional equivalence theory is taken as the theoretical guidance and case study as the translation’s primary research method.At the four levels of word,syntax,discourse,and text,this report analyzes the source text’s case by using such translation strategies as conversion,translating English into Chinese four-character phrases,addition and omission,culture-loaded words translation,voice conversion,division,restructuring,and logical relation words.Translation practice can prove that functional equivalence theory can guide the translation of suspense novels and restore the atmosphere of suspense novels.The application of functional equivalence theory in translation practice can help the translator translate more smoothly and improve its readability.It can also make the readers feel the tension of suspense novels as though they were on the scene and get a better reading experience.Finally,it is necessary to choose translation strategies carefully in the process of translation practice.Correct use of translation strategies can make the translation faithful in content and powerful in emotion.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 36...
