A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of The Kings Of The Desert Under The Guidance Of Adaptation Theory

The Kings of the Desert,the source text of the translation task,is a business news report excerpted from The New Yorker,written by American journalist Nicholas Schmidle who has paid much attention to developing countries.As a business news report,The Kings of the Desert has distinctive characteristics of English news,such as paying much attention to details and the accuracy of information.In addition,during the process of translation,the translator has also noticed other characteristics of the expression of its author Nicholas Schmidle,such as the frequent usage of parenthesis,the distinctiveness of indirect speech quotation “slipping into” direct speech quotation.Based on the linguistic features of the source text,the translator completed the translation task and wrote a practice report under the guidance of Adaptation theory.The main body of the report consists of five parts.The first part is the task description,which introduces the purpose and translation process of the translation task.The second part is the analysis of the source text.The third part is the theoretical foundation of the report ?Adaptation Theory.The fourth part is the case analysis,which is also the core part of this paper.Taking the translation of third-person pronouns,parentheses,and quotations as the research objects,the translator analyzes the corresponding translation skills from the three aspects of lexical adaptation,syntactic adaptation,and contextual adaptation.The fifth part is the conclusion of the report,which summarizes the shortcomings in the translation process and the translator’s understanding of Adaptation Theory through this translation practice.Although Adaptation Theory was first put forward as a pragmatic concept,many scholars in the field of translation have been studying its influence on translation over years.Through this translation practice,the translator deeply realized that to give full play to the guiding role of this theory in translation,the most important thing for the translator is to have an accurate understanding and proficiency in both the source and the target languages.
