Strategies For Translating English Parentheses Into Chinese In Academic Texts From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

As a major feature of English,Parentheses serve to convey the additional meaning of the text or an author’s attitudes.They are flexibly positioned and usually separated by brackets,commas,or dashes,serving supplemental and explanatory purposes.The positional flexibility and diversity of parentheses enable sentences to have multiple forms of expressions,which interrupts the continuity of the structure and meaning of sentences.The translator,therefore,should focus on the semantic coherence and readability of the translation while translating the selected text.Although domestic and foreign scholars have done a series of research and have summarized many translation strategies for English parentheses,few studies focus on the relationship between the classification and functions of parentheses and translation strategies for parentheses,and the verification of the translation from the perspective of the Adaptation Theory.Meanwhile,parentheses in different text types have various characteristics,which deserves further exploration.And the translation strategies for parentheses in the academic text are explored in this report.Based on the frequency and characteristics of parentheses in the translated text,this report analyzed the translation of sampled parentheses in the Introduction and Conclusion parts of Information Politics,trying to explore the translation strategies for parentheses in this academic text.The particularity of the academic text and the diversity of parentheses bring readers some difficulties in reading.Therefore,studying the translation strategies for parentheses in this book can provide ideas for the translation practice of the same type of text,and also enhance readers’ understanding of the author’s ideas.This report adopts the method of the case study.Based on the previous related literature and the translation practice of Information Politics,the translator applied and concluded six commonly used translation strategies for parentheses in the academic text,including adding repetitive and cohesive words,restructuring long sentences,embedding descriptive elements in sentences,translating with parenthesis marks,splitting parentheses into sentences or clauses,synthesizing various translation strategies.Among them,synthesizing various translation strategies is created by the translator based on the translation practice.In the case analysis,the translator gave corresponding examples for each strategy and explained the effectiveness of the translation strategies based on the classification and functions of the parentheses.Based on the translation practice and case analysis,the translator took the classification and functions of parentheses as determining factors in choosing corresponding translation strategies and summarized the context applicable to each translation strategy and the linguistic characteristics of the source language,as well as the corresponding relationship between the classification and functions of parentheses and their translation strategies.Meanwhile,Adaptation Theory guides the translator to verify the translated text by conforming to the academic genre and Chinese expression habits,so as to solve the reading difficulties caused by parentheses in the academic text.
