E-C Translation Report On Efficiency Paradox:Strategy In Achieving Semantic Cohesion Of Parenthesis

The material of this simulated E-C translation project is excerpted from Effciency Paradox by Edward Turner,an American expert on history of technological literacy.This book,on the subject of reflections of scientific and technological development,explores the blind spots of big data in improving work and life efficiency.This report explores the solutions to the translation difficulties of achieving semantic cohesion of parenthesis.Within the framework of functional equivalence theory,the author wrote this report after careful analysis and research on the difficulties in translation.The significant differences between English and Chinese languages in terms of sentence organization and expression methods bring about the difficulties in achieving the semantic cohesion of parenthesis:(1)difficulty in achieving the semantic cohesion of parenthesis for explanation;(2)difficulty in achieving the semantic cohesion of parenthesis for addition.The parenthesis for explanation refers to clarifying or specifically describing the content mentioned before,and the parenthesis for addition refers to supplementing information mentioned before.Since Chinese language focuses on parataxis,semantic devices are applied to connect words and sentences with less frequent use of parenthesis.Therefore,if parenthesis is translated into Chinese in line with the word order of the source text,the coherence and logic relation would be broken,and then the semantic cohesion of parenthesis would be failed to achieve.According to Nida's functional equivalence theory,translators do not seek to achieve structural and formal equivalence,but functional equivalence between the two languages,trying to suit the principles and ways of expression of the target language.Therefore,to achieve the semantic cohesion of parenthesis for explanation,the translation methods of cutting plus amplification and splitting were used,namely,cutting the sentence into several parts according to the sense-group and adding conjunction to deliver semantic cohesion.To achieve the semantic cohesion of parenthesis for addition,in accordance with the Chinese pattern of conveying logic and semantic relations,combination and inversion were applied.It is shown that the above methods can basically solve the problems in this project,which provides references for other translators to achieve semantic cohesion of parenthesis in E-C translation of technology reflection text.
