With the rapid development of social economy, people gradually tend to enrich their spiritual world by reading a large number of books. As we all know, social science texts are favored by the readers because the contents cover many subjects. In order to meet the readers' needs, more and more translators are devoted to the translation of social science texts. The book A Poetics of Unnatural Narrative was written by ten authors such as Maria M?kel? and James Phelan and so on.As one of the post-narrative schools, unnatural narratology has attracted much attention because of its “multifaceted” nature, and also has become a rising star in the narrative field. The whole book is divided into ten chapters, aiming at introducing the theories of unnatural narration and interpreting the relevant typical examples. The thesis is based on Chapter Seven Realism and The Unnatural and Chapter Eight Implausibilities, crossovers, and Impossibilities: a rhetorical approach to breaks in the code of Mimetic character narration.Based on the translation of Chapter Seven and Chapter Eight, the thesis focuses on the translation strategies for parenthesis from the perspective of the Functional Equivalence Theory. The parenthesis can be classified as independent phrases and its main function is to make the sentence more rigorous.Due to the various different cultural backgrounds between China and Western countries,it's easily to make the target text fail to express the meaning of the parenthesis of the source text. However, the parentheses in the social science text usually contain some new terms,so it's very difficult to make the target text accurate and natural. From the perspective of textual value,Hao Shining divides the parenthesis into five kinds: critical parenthesis, explanatory and complementary parenthesis, illustrational parenthesis, emphatic parenthesis and concluding parenthesis(Hao,2009: 61-62).Therefore,this classification of parenthesis is more clear and organized.Translators should translate the parenthesis in combination with the source text and use the most appropriate target language to achieve textual equivalence. As an unshakable existence in the translation circles, the Functional Equivalence Theory argues that its main purpose is to convert the source text to the target text in the most natural, appropriate and equivalent way.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator focuses on the translation strategies of English parenthesis. The whole thesis is divided into five parts: In Chapter One,the translator introduces the background of the translation task.Chapter Two is the discussion of the translation process and Chapter Three is a brief introduction to the Functional Equivalence Theory and parenthesis. In Chapter Four, the translator abandons the traditional classification methods of parenthesis and classifies parenthesis from the perspective of textual value.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory, the original meaning can be conveyed to the target readers with appropriate translation methods like splitting, omission, amplification and so on.In Chapter Five, the translator summarizes the findings and limitations of the thesis.
