A Report On The Translation Of A Patent Application Document A Utility Model

The translation of patent application documents is important when filing international patents.Since its readers include both technicians and patent examiners,a qualified translation is expected to accurately convey the technical content,expand the scope of legal protection,and its language should be fluent and standardized.The translator has conducted patent translation practice from June to September 2021,and this report selected one of the application documents.This report is consisted of four chapters.The first chapter introduced the background information,linguistic characteristics of the source text and the purpose and requirement of the translation task.The second chapter described the periods of translation preparation,preliminary translation and post translation.The third chapter explained the difficulties in this practice at the lexical,syntactic and textual/discourse level through case analysis and has given a suggested version.The fourth chapter concluded the findings and limitations of this report.More specifically speaking,at the lexical level,when translating technical terms,refer to the accompanying drawings for accurate comprehension and choose words with broader meanings to broaden the protection scope,and when translating common words,compare different meanings of similar words to avoid losses caused by vagueness;at the syntactic level,shift the contracted sentence structure into the one-member sentence in accordance with the norms in target language,when translating the complex sentences describing technical content,analyze the semantic relations between clauses for syntactic reconstruction;at the textual/discourse level,achieve a coherent and fluent translation through cohesion methods such as reiteration and collocation,and meanwhile achieve the linguistic and stylistic standardization by dealing with the formulaic language in the manner of normalization.Through this report,the translator hopes to provide some practical translation experience of patent application document for future reference.
