Patent is an exclusive right granted by a government office to an inventor or assignee for a limited period of time for carrying out his invention. Patent falls with the intellectual property. With the tendency of economic globalization, China has increasing exchanges with other countries in such fields as science and technology, economic trade. To cooperate is to compete. A growing number of enterprises are aware of the importance of intellectual property, in the hope of protecting their intellectual wealth by this means. Thus, they expect to set forth a patent application throughout the world to maximally protect their intellectual property and promote their economic growth. Under this background, patent application document translation emerges as required. The paper aims to guide the translation activity of a patent application document to further achieve translation strategies for patent application documents under the guidance of the skopos theory in combination with its three rules.The internship in RWS Group provides the practical source for the author to shape this paper. First, the paper introduces the background of the study, the current status of patent application document translation and the significance of the paper. Next, a simple analysis of relevant studies in domestic and abroad is made; then, detailed illustration is performed concerning the three parts comprised in a patent application document. And at last, based on the three rules of skopos theory, specific case studies are introduced to present the translation process of a patent application document. The case studies in these three parts are all analyzed from a micro and macro levels in combination with specific requirements in each part, so that appropriate translation strategies are employed. The author expects that the paper could offer practical or theoretical contribution to the studies on the translation of a patent application document.
