A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of The Tourism Part Of Nanjing Yearbook 2019

This project report is based on the author’s practical experience in the C-E translation project of Nanjing Yearbook 2019.As an informative text that reflects the social and economic development in Nanjing and focuses on the transmission of information,Nanjing Yearbook 2019 plays a significant role in presenting Nanjing to the world.Its English version can help expand Nanjing’s influence,attract foreign investment,and promote international exchange and cooperation.The author is responsible for the translation of the tourism part of Nanjing Yearbook 2019.In this report,the author analyzed the features of the source text and concluded the translation difficulties at lexical,syntactic and textual levels as follows:(1)the translation of terminologies,document titles and activity names at lexical level;(2)the translation of non-subject sentences as well as long and complicated sentences at syntactic level;(3)cohesion and coherence in the translation at textual level.Meanwhile,the author analyzed the causes of these translation difficulties which include linguistic differences between Chinese and English as well as the author’s limited knowledge of the fields involved in the source text.To solve these translation difficulties,the author first summarized three translation standards based on Functional Equivalence Theory and the features of informative texts and then put forward some translation strategies.The translation standards are as follows:(1)accurate transmission of information;(2)being objective and plain in terms of expression;(3)conforming to English expressing habits.The translation strategies are as follows:(1)as for the translation of terminologies,it is useful to refer to parallel texts and apply literal translation plus annotation and free translation;(2)as for the translation of document titles and activity names,special structures can be applied;(3)as for the translation of non-subject sentences,amplification and voice changes are advisable;(4)as for the translation of long and complicated sentences,linear translation,division and inversion are feasible;(5)as for the cohesion and coherence,cohesive devices and restructuring can be adopted.With analysis of the cases cited from the tourism part of the yearbook,this project report is hoped to serve as a reference to the English translations of the tourism parts of yearbooks and other informative texts.
