Vocabulary is the building material of language.Without it,language will lose its meaning.With the deepening of the One Belt One Road policy,the ties between China and South Africa have become closer,and South African students’ enthusiasm for learning Chinese has also been rising.The author worked as a volunteer Chinese teacher at the Confucius Institute of Durban University of Technology in South Africa from April 2019 to September 2020.Through the observation and summary of the teaching and learning of teachers and students during the internship at the Confucius Institute in Durban University of Technology.It was found that the students in Durban Confucius Institute had many problems on vocabulary,which greatly affected the improvement of students’ overall Chinese level.In addition,there are few researches on vocabulary teaching at the Confucius Institute of Durban University of Technology and even the whole of South Africa.Besides,the models of teaching and learning have changed a lot during the epidemic.Therefore,the author takes advantage of this practical opportunity,taking previous Chinese teachers of the Confucius Institute,especially the on-the-job Mandarinn teachers in 2019-2020 and the elementary Mandarin learners as the investigation objects.Using questionnaire survey method,in-depth interview method,test evaluation method and data statistics method to conduct investigation.The author investigates teachers from four aspects: the basic situation of teachers,curriculum setting,the use of teaching materials and teaching resources,and vocabulary teaching cognition and processing strategies,and investigate learners’ daily vocabulary learning from five aspects: students’ gender and age,learning motivation,learning strategies,learning experience,and the choice of learning mode under the epidemic situation,and examine students’ daily vocabulary learning from four aspects of vocabulary sound,form,meaning and usage.By designing questionnaires for teachers and students,investigating and sorting out the current situation of the elementary vocabulary teaching and learning at Confucius Institute in Durban University of Technology under the epidemic the following problems have been discovered: teachers are not solid in basic professional knowledge of Chinese,teaching experience is still lacking,practical language application ability needs to be improved.Under the epidemic situation,they are not familiar with the new teaching platform,and the teaching strategy is relatively simple;There is a conflict between the teaching materials and the curriculum schedule,and the applicability needs to be adjusted.Under the epidemic situation,the network resources are not fully utilized;Students do not practice vocabulary well and can not adapt to the new teaching mode.Based on the results of questionnaire and test evaluation,this paper takes the epidemic impact into the study,analyzes and formulates corresponding strategies from three aspects:teachers,teaching materials and students: On the part of teachers,three parts will be launched on teaching skills,teaching strategies,and exploration of new teaching models under the new situation;In terms of teaching materials,the adjustment of the content of the teaching materials,the supplement of teaching supplementary materials and the use of network resources are carried out;On the part of students,we explored learning motivations,learning strategies,and new learning perspectives.In order to provide reference for studying vocabulary teaching for the students of Confucius Institute at Durban University of Technology in South Africa under the new situation. |
