A Study Of C-e Simultaneous Interpreting From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

With the maturity of the interpretation industry,interpretation activities have a tendency of being more universal,professional and efficient.Besides,the language used at press conferences is mostly official language,which features extremely authoritative content,rather long sentences and complex sentence structure,resulting in grave difficulty in simultaneous interpreting.In this connection,it is very urgent to summarize strategies,methods and techniques that can be widely applied to ensure a timely,effective and high-quality interpretation on such public events.Guided by Eco-translatology,the author of this thesis takes the one-and-a-half-hour press conference organized by the Information Office of the State Council on China’s cooperation with the international community during the COVID-19 pandemic as the research data.Taking the core terms in Eco-translatology,including “leaning on the original ecology”,“making up for elements lacking in the target eco-environment”,“multi-dimensional transformations”,“eco-translation ethics”as the theoretical support,this thesis analyzes the methods and skills employed at this press conference in addressing the major difficulties in C-E interpreting activities.The findings are as follows:(1)“Eco-translation ethics”,which are present and instructive throughout the whole interpreting process,can be combined with interpreting approaches to guide simultaneous interpreting.(2)It is operational to apply core concepts in Eco-translatology to C-E simultaneous interpreting of press conferences.(3)In the simultaneous C-E interpretation of this press conference,the phenomena are revealed in the target language where the language is simplified,the communicative intention becomes more explicit,and meanings of some translated texts are more general than their equivalents.In consequence,the study concludes that:(1)In simultaneous interpretation,based on the principle of “symbiosis and diversity”,the interpreter can resort to literal translation and the shift skill to represent the translational eco-environments of the source text and choose free translation with the shift skill to lean on the target-language ecology.(2)Adhering to the principle of “balance and harmony”,one can adopt the techniques of adaptive addition and omission to create a more complete target eco-environment,making the long survival of the interpretation possible.(3)Built on the principle of “multiple eco-integration”,in the linguistic dimension of transformation,the interpreter can employ such skills as shift of parts of speech,level shift,shift of sentence order,combination and division,hypotaxis-parataxis shift to upgrade “the degree of holistic adaptation and selection” of interpreting.In the cultural and communicative dimensions of transformation,one can use the techniques including implicit-explicit conversion,specific-general conversion and affirmative-negative conversion to facilitate better communicative effects.
