A Report On E-C Translation Of The Key Man (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of The “Three-Dimensional Transformations” Of Eco-translatology

The translation material of this report is excerpted from a biography: The Key Man: The True Story of How the Global Elite Was Duped by a Capitalist Fairy Tale.How to reproduce the style of the source text(ST)and deliver the purpose of the author is an important issue in biography translation.According to Eco-translatology,translation is an effort to transplant the ST from source language’s(SL’s)eco-environment to target language ’s(TL’s)eco-environment.In this process,translators need to assure the “survival” of the translated text(TT)in the new eco-environment by making adaptive selections towards various elements.Among these elements,language,culture,and communication are the most important,which is the foundation of the “three-dimensional transformations”.It demands translators maintain the balance and harmony between ST and TT from linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions in translation.As the translation method of Eco-translatology,the “threedimensional transformations” can be used as guidance for biography translation.From the perspective of the “three-dimensional transformations” of Ecotranslatology,certain translation cases in linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions were analyzed respectively,discussing how the translator made adaptive selections and what translation strategies,methods and techniques were adopted to tackle translation issues.In linguistic dimension,the translation techniques: the conversion of parts of speech and the adoption of Chinese fourcharacter structure were applied by the translator at lexical level to improve the aesthetic effect of the translation on the premise of taking the differences between the two languages into consideration.At syntactic level,the translator used shift of voice,division,and combination to make the translation more readable and conform to the expression habits of the TL.In cultural dimension,domestication was employed by the translator to deliver the connotative meaning of English idioms that do not contain specific cultural images.In communicative dimension,the translator adapted to the author’s writing purpose and conveyed the communicative intention with the help of explicitation by using translation techniques and methods such as diction,amplification,conversion of punctuation,liberal translation,and literal translation plus annotation.The translator hopes that this report can provide valuable references for the translation of biography or other types of texts.
