| With lateral camera movement as the object of study,This paper examines the narrative creation and image expression of lateral camera movement in films by adopting poetics of cinema and phenomenological method.Traditionally,a moving shot is a form of interaction between camera and mise-en-scène.Lateral camera movement is considered a form of camera movement in which the camera is horizontal to the subject at 90 degrees and always moves along an x-axis parallel to the subject. From early cinema as a lateral travelling shot, lateral camera movement borrows the media vocabulary of the moving panorama, extending the panoramic perception of train travel and tending to keep the audience watching at a distance for contemplation. With narrative integration, the lateral travelling shot developed into the lateral tracking shot and emerged as a lens language.Along with the changing concept of camera movement, the standardization of sound and camera technology, and the deep influence of ideology, narrative film, dominated by classical Hollywood, developed conventions and specific strategies of lateral camera movement.Since art film and experimental film are more concerned with how to use lateral camera movement from the aspect of image, this paper takes a step further by using the phenomenology of camera movement to reveal the image nature of lateral camera movement. From the perspective of visual perception,a lateral moving shot can be recognized as a horizontal movement of the picture, entering from one side and disappearing from the other. The heterogeneity implied by lateral travelling shots in early cinema is further expressed as a sense of flatness that suppresses the illusion of depth and encourages viewers to pay attention to the pictoriality and materiality of the moving image. The lateral moving shot can be perceived as a horizontal planar vector that leads to perceptual psychology in the visual direction, evoking particular perceptual experiences in the process of constructing spatiality. In digital cinema, the lateral moving shot borrows from the visual experience of side-scrolling video games, transcending the concept of shot in the process of gamification, which results in real-time generated or real-time controlled lateral moving images. In the wider moving image media, primarily new media, lateral moving images also demonstrate haptics, inviting the spectator or user to experience them in a richer perceptual way. While unfolding a panorama of lateral camera movement, this paper also focuses on the conceptual transformation and methodological shift of camera movement, hoping to provide a dynamic framework for examining other forms of motion lenses and give some reference for domestic scholars to study camera movement. |
