As an important part of English teaching in junior high schools, the teaching of English reading will be a main breakthrough to the implementation of core literacy education. The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022-year Edition)requires teachers to focus on the fundamentality and practicality of language learning in teaching, especially on cultivating students’ English reading ability. However, the current teaching mode of English reading classes in rural middle schools is still mostly “teacher-oriented”,which leads to a single form of teaching, boring teaching content and insufficient interest of student.Since the implementation of the “double reduction” policy in education,it’s been imperative to promote the English course reform in order to improve the students’ English reading efficiency. The best teachers in the teaching field have been trying to explore new effective ways based on the advice given by educational experts. And among them, the Guided Learning Project attracted the author’s attention because of its focus on the “studentoriented” concept and its successful application to the teaching of English in junior high schools. On the basis of careful reading of literature and analysis of successful cases, the author carefully analyzed and summarized the application of Guided Learning Project in the teaching of English reading in junior high schools, aiming to clarify the feasibility of the application of the Guided Learning Project in the teaching of English reading in rural middle schools and prepare for the experiment. The study aims to find out the suitable methods for teaching English reading in rural areas by solving the following three problems.(1)What is the impact of the Guided Learning Project on students’ interest in reading and their learning habit when applied to English reading in rural junior high schools?(2)What is the impact of the Guided Learning Project on students’ reading strategies and performance when applied to the teaching of English reading in rural junior high schools?(3)When the Guided Learning Project applied to the teaching of English reading in rural junior high schools, which level of students will take full advantage of it,highlevel or low-level students? The experiment was carried out in a rural junior high school in Fuyang. And the study conducted a semester of practical research with two classes in the seventh grade of the school where I taught. One was an experimental class and the other one was a reference class. The experimental class adopted the mode of the Guided Learning Project, and the Guided Learning Project runs through the whole class including preclass preparation,in-class presentation and post-class summary. The reference class adopted the traditional teaching mode, which is generally divided into five steps:leading in,new words, translation of articles, explanation of difficult points, and completing of related exercises and assigning homework. After the experiment, the results of the test paper and the questionnaire data were analyzed with the help of the software SPSS 25.0.And the interview data were also collected and analyzed. The results of the experiment showed that the reading performance of the experimental class using the Guided Learning Project was obviously better than that of the reference class using the traditional teaching mode. The students in the experimental class were much more interested in English reading after the adoption of the Guided Learning Project. And after a period of study, the students’ initiative in English reading and their strategies and skills in English reading were all improved a lot.By comparing the results of the two reading tests in the experimental class,it was found that the Guided Learning Project was the most helpful for the high-level students compared to the low-level students.
