| In recent years, the number of historical texts imported from abroad has increased year by year, and the popularity of such texts among readers has gradually increased, with a large number of translations appearing and the translation of historical texts becoming more and more popular. There are also many studies around the translation of such texts, which shows that the public attaches great importance to the issue of translation of historical texts. This is a report on English-Chinese translation. The original text of the translation report is the first chapter of the book The Anglo-Saxons:A History of the Beginnings of England, which consists of 10 chapters and is written by Mark Morris,a British historian who studies medieval history. This translation report first introduces the background and significance of the text, the author and the original text, and the structure of the text. Then, the translator introduces the process of translation, including the preparation before translation, translation process, and proofreading after the translation.During the translation process, the translator faced many problems in Roman history, culture, and language, which mostly focused on three levels: lexical, syntactical, and discourse level. At lexical level, the difficulties include the translation of proper nouns and culture-loaded words;at syntactical level, the difficulties include the translation of attributive clauses and compound and complex sentences;and finally,at discourse level, the difficulties include textual coherence. The translator has taken corresponding solutions to the above difficulties, such as transliteration of proper nouns, and annotation of culture-loaded words by consulting books. For the difficulties at the syntactical level, the translator adopts the preposition and postposition method,as well as the method of translating attributive clauses into adverbial clauses, and uses the restructuring method to translate compound and complex sentences. For the difficulties at the discourse level, the translator adopts sentence division, divided long sentences into short sentences, and translates the logical words in the original text. The translator has gained a lot from this translation project. On the one hand, not only does she learn about the history and culture of the late Roman Empire and the early stages of the beginning of Britain, but she also learns how to use professional translation methods and knowledge to translate historical texts. In addition, excellent translations often require the translator to be conscientious and diligent. This translation report has enabled the translator to gain a great deal of experience, not only to strengthen the skills of English-Chinese translation, but also to improve the ability to grasp and convey the original English text. |
