Practice Report On The Application Of Syntactic Linearity Principle In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting can pr eserve more information compared with simultaneous interpreting;consequently it is the choic e of many international conferences.Syntactic linearity p rinciple is one of the most ba sic principles in simultaneous interpreting.It can greatly relieve simultaneous interpreters from heavy memory burden and help with the deali ng of long and complex sentences,both of which also bother consecutive interpreters.However,there is relatively a very small amount of researches on whether syntactic linearity principle can be used in consecutive interpreting.Questions including whether syntactic linearity principle can be used in consecutive interpreting and what are the exceptions and rules in its app lication have hardly been answered.This paper tries to shed some light on these questions from theoretical perspective and ba sed on the distin ct characteristics of English-Chin ese interpreting.Features o f English a nd Chinese can resu lt in m any difficulties in consecutive interpreting.In English-Chines e consecutive interpreting,interpreters especially have to de al with th e contradiction of note-ta king and m emory.In theoretical part,based on Danial Gile' s Effort Model,this paper starts from consecutive interpreters' memory mechanism and note-taking and discusses the feasibility of syntactic linearity principle in consecutive interpreting.A case study on a speech made by Leung Chun-Ying at Asian Financial Forum 2016 Opening Session made is also included.By the case st udy,whether and how syntactic linearity principle can be used in consecutive in terpreting is clearer.The purpose of the analysis is to answer the three questions before-mentioned.In the end,the paper refers to resear ches on people's memory mechanism and note-taking and finds that keeping notes simple and focusing on com prehending and memory can deal with m any differences between two languages in gramm atical cohesion,syntax and context.In practical part,it is proven th at syntactic linearity principle can be applied in consecutive in terpreting in most cases.By techniques in sight interpreting like sentence division and repetition,interpreters can preserve more information and improve their interpreting.
