With the deepening of China’s exchanges with the outside world, conference interpreting has attracted more attention, and the important role of interpreters in conference interpreting is self-evident.In consecutive interpreting, there are great differences between Chinese and English in the use of cohesion, and the choice of appropriate cohesive devices can make interpreting coherent and logical. This greatly improves the quality of interpreting and ensures the smooth progress of the conversation. Therefore, the use of cohesive devices in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting should be paid close attention to.In terms of theoretical framework, this thesis selects relevance theory in cognitive linguistics.According to the relevance principle, choosing appropriate cohesive devices is conducive to accurately conveying the true intention of the speaker.By using cohesive devices under the guidance of relevance theory, interpreters can make utterances have sufficient cognitive effects without consuming too much energy on the part of listeners.Through the study of cohesion under relevance theory, this thesis aims to solve three problems: 1 What cohesive devices does the interpreter use in the press conference? 2 How does the interpreter use cohesion to achieve the optimal relevance?3 What practical cohesive strategies can be summarized under the guidance of relevance theory? This thesis analyzes the use of cohesive devices in grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion, and finds there are three effective strategies for interpreters, namely, conversion, amplification and omission,in order to reduce the obstacles in the process of interpreting. This thesis hopes to enrich studies on cohesion in consecutive interpreting.
