In order to improve international competitiveness,non-ferrous metals companies actively seek to develop international cooperation and expand the international market by providing English profiles.The company profile,in Reiss’ text typology,is a hybrid text with the features of both an informative text and appellative text.The translation of non-ferrous metals company profiles should,for one thing,focus on transmitting information,and for another thing,pay attention to the needs and cultural background of the target audiences to attract them.However,inappropriate translations in the English profiles cause the inadequacy of the C-E translation of the company profiles which is considered as the failed performance of functions of translation from the perspective of Nord.For the analysis of the performance of their function,31 domestic nonferrous metals company profiles are picked out of 51 top nonferrous companies in China.According to the analysis,the inadequacy of the translation happens frequently.Firstly,the reasons for the inadequacy of English company names are listed,including misspelling,misuse of Co.,Ltd,and failed transmission of connotation in the translation of company names and the corrections are put forward respectively in Chapter 2.Then,for an accurate and objective assessment of the translation of profiles’ content,qualitative content analysis is used.31 domestic nonferrous metals company profiles are uploaded into Nvivo,a software for the qualitative analysis,for coding to analyse the inappropriate translations in those profiles causing the inadequacy of translation from the perspective of the frequency of intralinguistic errors,cultural issues,and misinformation in the company content.It is worth mentioning that the coding is in accordance with Reiss’ list of intralinguistic and extralinguistic instruction criteria,Nord’s functionality plus loyalty,and Islam Ababneh’s research on the frequent problems made by non-native English speakers with adjustments based on the real situation.The analysis result is as follows: intralinguistic errors(846)are made most frequently,then cultural issues(69),and misinformation(39).The inadequacy takes its roots in differences between Chinese and English,translators’ linguistic incompetence and ignorance of related information,and the lack of translation quality assessment model.After the analysis of those problems and their causes,the strategies to improve the translation quality are put forward: 1)adequate preparation before translation;2)cultivation of English competence and awareness of the differences between English and Chinese;3)appropriate translation techniques in translation,including substitution,ellipsis,and variation to deal with repetition and omission of ideological information and domestication for culture-loaded words and expressions;3)self-assessment of the TT based on Reiss’ criteria after translation.The reasons and roots of inadequacy of the C-E translation of Chinese nonferrous metals company profiles listed and the strategies put forward in the thesis,provide a reference for domestic nonferrous metals companies to assess and improve their translation quality of profiles,which creates a new perspective to spread their enterprise culture and broaden the international trade channel. |
