The Influence Of Informal Elderly Care On The Employment Of Adult Children Under The Trend Of Aging

The likelihood of disability increases with age.As a vulnerable group in society,the elderly population should receive more attention and care.The purpose of providing elderly care is to address the incapacity of older people in family life care(such as shopping,cooking,cleaning,etc.)and self-care(such as bathing,dressing and feeding).Chinese society inherits the traditional Confucian thought,and the social ethics idea of "raising children for old age" is deeply rooted.As a result,adult children become the main undertaker of the responsibility of elderly care.With the increase of the time that children take care of the elderly,their labor supply is likely to be affected.Using the 2010-2018 China Health and Elderly Tracking Survey(CHARLS)panel data and instrumental variable method,this paper empirically analyzed the impact of informal elderly care activities on children’s employment.The results showed that participation in caregiving activities reduced children’s working hours by 643.63 hours per year,which was significant at the level of 1%.Taking care activities increased children’s wage income by 4.3% each year.Although this result was not significant,it may have verified the "income effect" of elderly care on children’s employment to some extent.Heterogeneity analysis results show that the elderly care activities on the market competitiveness of poor rural male children employment the negative impact of a larger,lower socioeconomic status are more dependent on informal caregivers to take care of,and are more likely to limit children’s labor supply market,compared with the old man to live,different live reduce child labor market will be more time.Finally,the author also found that the elderly health service centers,elderly care institutions,family purchase of care services and elderly subsidies play a certain role in alleviating the conflict between child employment and elderly care.
