A Case Study On Enhancing Intergenerational Support In Nanny-elderly Immigrants

With the rapid advancement of modernization and urbanization,and accelerated development of society since Reform and Opening-up,which resulted in a large-scale and high-speed population migration in China.Under the influence of gender equality and feminism,Chinese women are realizing their social and personal values by attending education,participating in workplaces and pursuing self-determination.With the implementation of the comprehensive two-child policy,the need for child-caring multiplied.Driven by the traditional Chinese family concept and flesh-and-blood kinship,the elderly and young people generally think that it is reasonable or even natural for their ancestors to take care of their grandchildren and their unshirkable responsibilities and obligations.Under such circumstances,a mobile elderly group with Chinese characteristics,Nanny Elderly Immigrants,has emerged.However,to the best of our knowledge,the academic by far has not pay enough attention to this phenomenon.The current study firstly conducted a field survey in Wuhan where a total of 35 Nanny Old Drifters in H community were interviewed.The result showed that the lack of intergenerational support of their co-resident children was one of the significant common problems in this group.After two-way selection,a 65-year-old " Nanny Elderly Immigrants",Aunt Chen,became the object in author’s case service.The ABC-X family stress theory was adapted to analyze the current situation of the object’s family,while followed a three-stage case service assisting the object to acquire intergenerational support from her co-resident children.The results showed that the casework could serve the need of Nanny Elderly Immigrants by improving their co-resident children’s intergenerational support,which in turn enhance their adaptability for collateral problems in the new environment.By doing this,Nanny Elderly Immigrants could perceive a higher level of subjective well-being as well as conduct the active aging process.However,limitation of case services is still significant that the small coverage hardly meet actual needs of the majority.Therefore,the government is encouraged to continuously develop better public service system of childcare and old-age care to ease the pressure of Nanny Elderly Immigrants so that they could be securely enjoy their old age with peace of mind.,thus promoting their active aging.
