With the increasing of depression level of college students in China, the influence of depression on college students’ physical and mental health is more and more obvious. Some studies believe that individuals’ cognition of their own socioeconomic status,i.e.subjective socioeconomic status,is significantly correlated with depression. And the level of self-esteem is also closely correlated with the depression. In this study, college students were taken as the research object, and the three variables of college students’ subjective socioeconomic status,self-esteem and depression were comprehensively studied by using the College Students’ Subjective Social Status Index, the Chinese version of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(RSES)and the Center for Epidemiological Studies for Depression Scale(CES-D)as the tools. The study reached the following conclusions:(1)College students’ subjective socioeconomic status is at a moderately low level, and there is a significant difference in the category of college student cadres. The university-level cadres of the youth league committee and the student union are significantly higher than the school-level cadres of the youth league committee and the student union, and significantly higher than the non-student cadres.Among the indicators of subjective socioeconomic status, the scores of talent level, academic performance and social practice ability rank the top three.(2)College students’ self-esteem is at an upper medium level, and there are significant differences in the college category, the only child, the grade and the place of origin."985" college students are significantly higher than those in higher vocational colleges.Singleton children were significantly higher than non-singleton children.Postgraduate students are significantly higher than freshmen.Students in second-tier cities are significantly higher than those in third-tier and fourth-tier cities, counties, towns and rural areas.(3)The detection rate of depression among college students is 43.33%.There were significant differences in the positive emotional factors of depression, and the rural students were significantly lower than the second-tier urban students. The somatic symptom factors of depression were significantly different in subjects, and social science students were significantly lower than science and agriculture students.(4)College students’ subjective socioeconomic status is positively correlated with self-esteem,negatively correlated with depression.Self-esteem is negatively correlated with depression.(5)Both subjective socioeconomic status and self-esteem of college students can significantly negatively predict depression, and subjective socioeconomic status can also predict depression of college students through self-esteem.(6)Self-esteem plays a significant part in mediating between subjective socioeconomic status and depression.
