| As the status of women in society continues to rise,variety shows that focus on women are emerging.Among them,women’s variety shows have received much attention as a new format.In the current era of generalized entertainment,it is increasingly important to correctly perceive the female media images.This study is based on the social reality of women in China,and attempts to analyze the characteristics of female images in female group variety shows and the causes of the female images presented in the shows.This thesis selects four most popular female group variety shows from 2018 to 2020,namely Produce 101,Youth With You Season 2,CHUANG 2020 and Sister Who Makes Waves as the object of study,takes the videos of the four variety shows as data samples.This thesis analyzes female media images from a feminist perspective and based on gender theory.And data statistics and content analysis method are used to conduct an in-depth analysis of the image characteristics of females in female group variety shows.In addition,this thesis uses questionnaire survey method and interview approach to investigate the audience of female group variety shows in order to analyze the causes of the presented female images in female group variety shows in terms of audience psychology.Finally,this thesis combines the survey results with relevant existing social statistics and literature results,and adds two analytical dimensions of social culture and consumer culture to comprehensively interpret the ideological and social realities that exist behind the presented female images in the phenomenal female group variety shows in the past three years.The study finds that the female group variety shows from 2018 to 2020 have shaped and presented positive and diversified female images,with the following characteristics in general:striving for advancement,affectionate,united and friendly,tough and hardworking,modest and courteous,and good strength,and all of them are in good shape and have a delicate and thin body.From the perspective of the change of female images,female images present and show the trend of aesthetic diversification,more emphasis on personality,trying to break through the age limit,which also confirms the diversified characteristics of Chinese women’s media images in the 21st century.However,the female images presented in female group variety shows are still under the shadow of male identity dominated by patriarchal society,which are reflected in women’s psychological anxiety and concern about age,marital status,fertility states and keeping in shape.The causes for such presentation of the female images in these variety shows are:1.Audience psychological factors:the female media images presented in the female variety shows are largely to meet the audience’s viewing needs;2.Socio-cultural factors:the female images presented in the female variety shows are the result of contemporary women’s continuous internalization of men’s gender role expectations of women in a patriarchal society;3.Consumer cultural factors:female group variety shows are actually cultural industrial production dominated by the logic of capital,and the female media images presented in the shows are driven by capital and profit.Female group variety shows not only have great commercial potential in the marketplace,but they also have outstanding value for studying the relationship between current popular culture,gender and media.This study provides a complete sample of female group variety shows as research objects in the past three years for the study of female media images,making theoretical and practical contributions to the public’s correct perception of contemporary female media images in China,promoting gender equality between men and women,and promoting the overall improvement of the social status of female. |
