Happiness is an eternal topic and the ultimate goal pursued by mankind. In the current stage of development in our country, political, economic and social aspects are still in transition, the gap between rich and poor is expending, various social problems began to be exposed, this will inevitably affect the overall happiness of the people.Improving national well-being is becoming an important issue for the country’s sound and healthy development. As a window for people to perceive the world, media will largely affect people’s judgment of life satisfaction, affect people’s subjective well-being.Especially in recent years, information technology rapidly develop, new media technologies represented by the Internet rapidly rise, incorporating traditional media that has always been dominant, infiltrate people’s daily life more and more deeply, and people are becoming more and more dependent on the media.Newspapers, radio, television and other traditional media promote mainstream ideology, represent the official discourse,Spread positive social information. But due to Internet and other new media are of openness, anonymity, and strong interactivity, give users information autonomy, cover a vast array of content, different cultures and different concepts can collide and communicate at any time. Then, what impact will the new and old media have on residents’ subjective wellbeing? If there is an impact, will the effects be different? Does the old and new media influence happiness through what mechanism? These issues are worthy of our in-depth discussion.Because the media can influence the audience’s consciousness, attitudes and concepts through its communication content, combined with the current modernization process and globalization background of our country, this article selects social attitudes and post-materialist values as the mediating effect mechanism to be tested. This article uses CGSS2015 data to analyze and compare the effects of traditional media and new media on subjective well-being,social attitudes, and postmaterialist values through multiple linear regression analysis, and analyzes the impact of social attitudes and post-materialist values on subjective well-being.Test the mediating effect of social attitudes and post-materialist values through Sobel test and KHB test. The results of the study found that media use has a significant positive impact on the subjective well-being of residents, whether it is traditional media or new media. In contrast, traditional media use has a stronger impact on subjective well-being than new media. At the same time, social attitudes and post-materialist values play an intermediary role in different degrees and directions in the process of their influence on subjective well-being.
