Prosocial behavior is an individual’s behavior that benefits others, which is conducive to the establishment and maintenance of a good interpersonal relationship.Since prosocial behavior is affected by individual factors and environmental factors, different person shows different degrees of prosocial behaviors. When the word "narcissism" is mentioned, people’s first reaction is arrogance and bluster. However, with the deepening and analysis of narcissism research,it is found that the characteristics of inferiority and hypersensitivity also exist in narcissism, that is,the two types of narcissism are overt narcissism and covert narcissism. Two narcissistic personalities have some common internal characteristics, both of which have the characteristics of paying too much attention to themselves and indulging in their own world. In recent years, there are more and more researches on two types of narcissism and prosocial behavior, but the results are inconsistent, and the influencing factors are not deeply discussed. On the one hand, the external environment is a factor that cannot be ignored,in which the guilty situation plays a certain regulatory role in maintaining interpersonal and social relations. On the other hand, individual internal factors will also have an important impact on their prosocial behaviors, and their different self-control abilities will affect the prosocial behaviors’ change. So,for the two types of narcissistic individuals,it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on whether the initiation of guilty situation will affect their prosocial behaviors and whether self-control will play a role in this process. The pre-experiment used Zheng Yong’s Narcissism Personality Scale to test undergraduates, and collected 1060 valid questionnaires, and screened out 151 students in the overt narcissism group and 149 students in the covert narcissism group.Experiment 1: To explore the influence of narcissism on undergraduates ’prosocial behavior.35 overt narcissistic participants and 36 covert narcissistic participants were selected to participate in the pre-experiment.The single-factor inter-subject design was used. The independent variable was narcissistic type and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior. The amount of money allocated to the recipients was used as the index of prosocial behavior. The results show that: overt narcissism, covert narcissism, and prosocial behaviors are negatively correlated;the prosocial behaviors of overt narcissistic participants’ group are significantly more than the overt narcissistic participants’ group.Experiment 2: To explore the influence of narcissism on undergraduates ’prosocial behaviors under different priming conditions.65 overt narcissists and 69 covert narcissists from the pre-experiment.A two-factor inter-subject design of 2(narcissistic type: overt narcissism, covert narcissism)* 2(priming type: neutral priming, guilt priming)was adopted. The independent variables were narcissistic type and priming type, and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior. The results show that: under neutral priming condition, the prosocial behaviors of overt narcissists are significantly higher than that of covert narcissists;under guilt priming condition, the prosocial behaviors of both narcissists are significantly higher than that of neutral condition, and the prosocial behaviors of covert narcissists are significantly higher than that of overt narcissists.Experiment 3: To investigate the influence of narcissism on undergraduates’ prosocial behaviors in the context of guilt: the mediating role of self-control.31 overt narcissistic participants and 32 covert narcissistic participants were selected from the pre-experiment.The single-factor inter-subject design was used. The independent variable was narcissistic type and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior. The results show that: under the guilty situation,self-control plays a mediating role in overt narcissism, covert narcissism, and prosocial behavior.Through three experiments, this study explored the prosocial behavior and the role of self-control of undergraduates with overt narcissism and covert narcissism under the condition of the guilty situation. The conclusion is as follows:1.Both overt narcissism and covert narcissism are negatively correlated with prosocial behaviors;overt narcissistic undergraduates show more prosocial behaviors than covert narcissistic undergraduates.2.Guilt priming condition has a significant effect on two types of narcissistic undergraduates’ prosocial behaviors.Compared with the neutral group, the guilty priming group significantly improves the prosocial behaviors of two types of narcissistic undergraduates;and the covert narcissistic undergraduates in the guilt priming group show more prosocial behaviors than the overt narcissistic undergraduates.3.Under the guilty situation, both overt narcissism and covert narcissism’s prosocial behaviors are mediated by self-control.
