The Influence Of The Gender Of Children On Parents’ Subjective Well-being

In the context of the increasing level of economic development,people’s thoughts have changed because of the influence of the changes in economic development level.The factors of multiple development and change make the role,evaluation and attention of women groups in the whole social group and in the family change.For the family,the role of daughters have changed.And the family size in China is reducing.The children in family is reducing and the burden of children for parents may be increased.However,the new social development level increase the burden of raising children for parents to help theadult children.For example,there is a saying that "two boys fear",that is,two sons will bring more pressure to parents.But for parents,whether the traditionalconception of childbearing still exists in the new social background,whether children will bring different happiness to parents because of the gender,and whether the two-way intergenerational support can be used as the intermediary factor to explain the different influences will be answered through the test of this paper.The data source of this paper is CGSS2017.The OLS linear regression model is constructed by stata15 software to explore the influence of gender structure on parents’ subjective well-being.In the required samples,the gender structure of children is divided into childless,one son,one daughter,two sons,two daughters and one child and one daughter.Different reference groups are changed to observe the influence of children’s gender structure on parents’ subjective wellbeing.Besides,the two-way intergenerational support is chosen as the intermediary factor to explore the influence of different gender structure of children on parents’ owners When the sense of happiness has an impact,whether the two-way intergenerational support can be the intermediary factor.The conclusions of this paper are as follows:First,the subjective well-being of parents with children is stronger than the parents without children,but only based on having children,there is no significant difference in the influence of different children’s gender structure on parents’ subjective well-being,one son and one daughter does not show the best children’s gender structure,and two sons do not bring "two boys fear" to parents;second,for urban parents,the gender structure of one son or two sons arenotbetter than without children.For parents in rural areas,compared with one sonand one daughter,one daughter does not have a positive impact on the improvement of the parents’ subjective well-being;third,compared with parents with only sons ordaughters,parents with one son and one daughter have no difference on their subjective well-being.As for the intergenerational support,daughters can provide more spiritual consolation;the parents need to provide more financial supportto the sons,and need to provide more spiritual consolation to thedaughters;fourth,two-way intergenerational support can significantly improve the subjective well-being of parents;for urban parents,two-way intergenerational economic support and two-way spiritual consolation can significantly improve the subjective well-being of parents.For rural parents,two-way intergenerational economic support,two-way intergenerational life care and two-way intergenerational spiritual consolation will have a significant positive impact on their subjective well-being,and two-way intergenerational economic support can improve mothers’ subjective well-being;fifth,two-way intergenerational support can not be fully explained as a mediating factors that explain the reason between the children’s gender structure and parents’ subjective well-being.Based on the above conclusions,the policy recommendations are as followsfirst,as for family,For parents,they should take positive fertility behavior in combination with the actual situation of their own family,and pay attention to thequality of their children.What’s more,they should also correct their own reproductive motivation to avoid sex selection or gender orientation of children;second,as for society.While encourage fertility,we should improve the fertility policy and related policies as soon as possible,pay attention to the social phenomena such as high education cost of children,to relieve the fertility concerns of the population of childbearing age.
