Research On The Specialization Of Social Work In Hospital Field

Promoted by the national policy,the medical affairs social work of Guangdong,which has seen a better environment for social work development,is developing rapidly.However,problems have emerged at the same time,including blurring role orientation,severe administrationalization.Social work,when affected by the elements in the field of hospital,may develop its professionalism.This dissertation thus places the focus on the specialization of social work in the hospital field,identify the factors in the hospital field that affect it and finally examine the route of the specialization.This paper takes the social work project of X Hospital in Guangzhou as an example.The author employs case study as the research method and collects his data through participating observation and interviewing.Altogether 2 social work project leaders and 4 front-line social workers in X Hospital were interviewed.Guided by the concept of "field,capital and habit" in Bourdieu’s field theory,the author finds that the national and local governments provide institutional legitimacy for social work to enter the hospital field through institutional design.When social work enters the hospital field,it will be affected by such factors as department setting,macro decision-making tendency,humanistic mission and income generation.This enables the medical social work to be boosted and pulled by administrative affairs;The practice of social workers presents a macro bias,with levels and emphasis in direct practice and indirect practice.The humanistic mission of hospital and the requirement of income generation make social work find the effective combination point of service and highlight the role nature of "income generation" of social work.Under the influence of this,social workers flexibly use physical cultural capital,social capital and symbolic capital,and realize specialization through exerting their own professional capital and habits.Using the separation of administrative affairs,improving the knowledge system and focusing on indirect social work services to enhance their professional capital;The combination and play of humanitarianism and social welfare concepts in professional values with humanistic care services needed by hospitals and the prominent role of "income generator" enable social work to better adapt to the hospital field and lay a good foundation.In the end,the social worker activists depend on their own professional value concept,knowledge,work skill and other professional capital and rituals to achieve the effect of professional services,and to promote their own professional.In the interaction with the hospital,the social workers work out an approach to a macro tendency in their practice,i.e.a favoring linking to external resources,and providing community services rather than traditional micro professional practice.
