The construction of world-class universities plays a decisive role in the development of a country.As an important part of the higher education system,it bears the great mission of cultivating talents and scientific research and innovation.Many countries in the world regard the construction of world-class universities as an important strategic goal to develop their own higher education and put it into action.Our country also attaches great importance to it.In order to build a world-class university in China,this paper studies the factors influencing the growth of world-class universities.First of all,this study defines the basic concept of university and the world first-class university,then on the basis of the organizational life cycle theory discusses the organization the applicability of the life cycle theory of university organization,and organization life cycle theory to elaborate the life cycle of the university: creating period,growth period,mature period and longer development,a total of four growth stages.Then,this paper analyzes the factors that influence the growth of world-class universities,including external factors and internal factors.The external factors include social services,the relationship with the government,regional factors,macro-educational policies,economic development,political factors,etc.The internal influencing factors include scientific research,President’s ability,internationalization,funds,faculty and quality of talent training.Then,on the basis of the two theories,a theoretical model of influencing factors for the growth of world-class universities based on the theory of organizational life cycle is constructed,which lays a theoretical foundation for the follow-up research.Secondly,research design is carried out.The research design is divided into four parts.The first part determines the research problem and research hypothesis of this paper.The second part analyzes the research methods.First,it explains the reasons for choosing case study methods,introduces the characteristics of case study method and the applicability of this study,and then explains the reasons for choosing exploratory single case study methods according to the characteristics of this study.The third part is the case study scheme design,including case selection,data sources of case studies,data analysis strategies and techniques,etc.First,According to the typicality of the case,the stage of the growth process,the autonomy and initiative of the growth,and the accessibility of the research materials,the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was selected as the object of the case study.Secondly,the data sources of this study are explained.Finally determined from the analysis of influence factors in the key events,to determine the critical incident data analysis technique is the event system analysis method,namely,intensity,time and events from the event space three aspects determine research value of events,extraction and data analysis of the influential factors of extraction method is based on grounded theory,through open coding,axial coding and selective coding to extract factors.The fourth part is a brief introduction of MIT and the selection results of key events.In other words,22 key events were selected from the growth process of MIT by using event system analysis method.Finally,the case analysis and theoretical model modification of the factors affecting the growth process of MIT are carried out.In this paper,the life cycle of MIT from its establishment in 1861 to the beginning of the 21 st century is divided into four stages: the founding stage,the growth stage,the maturity stage and the redevelopment stage.Then,22 influencing factors were extracted from 22 key events in the growth process of MIT,and a total of 22 influencing factors were obtained through open encoding,axial encoding and selective encoding of the text data of key events.Then,from the perspective of three,Massachusetts institute of technology to the influence factors of the growth process analysis,and respectively analyzed the Massachusetts institute of technology(MIT)seven main factors of the whole process of growth,the growth stage in the main influence factors and the main influencing factors among different growth stages,and based on the analysis of factors influencing the results of theoretical model.Finally,through the study of the factors affecting the growth process of world-class universities and the analysis of the actual growth process of Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT),some enlightenments on the development of universities are put forward from the founding,growing,maturing and redeveloping stages of universities.
