Alfred North Whitehead is a famous British mathematician,logician,philosopher and educator,and the founder of process philosophy.Whitehead’s thought of freedom and discipline education is an important part of Whitehead’s educational theory.Whitehead believes that freedom and discipline are two basic elements in the educational process,and they run through the whole process of education.Whitehead’s educational theory is rooted in his philosophical theory,which is the practice of his philosophical theory in education.Therefore,this paper analyzes the philosophical basis of Whitehead’s freedom and discipline education thought.The theory of process,the theory of creativity,the theory of subjectivity,the theory of ingestion and the theory of relevance are the five basic theories related to Whitehead’s thought of freedom and discipline education.The theory of process is the essential explanation of the existence of the universe,and everything is constantly changing.The theory of creativity points out that creativity is the motive force and purpose of the development of things;The theory of subjectivity emphasizes that only the facts or experiences that the subject can feel can play a role in the development of the subject;The theory of ingestion is the concrete description of the process,and the creative development of things is due to the ingest activities and the new elements.The theory of relevance is the analysis of raw materials.Everything is related,and there is no completely isolated thing.Freedom and discipline constitute the current state of things.The current self is formed on the basis of the past self.The past is the fact that has happened,which is decisive and reflects discipline.The process of construction is the process of the subject’s free choice of these facts.Freedom and discipline also provide motivation and conditions for the development of things.Being able to freely ingest new elements,realizing innovation is the driving force for the development of the subject,and various elements ingested are the conditions for individual construction.The result of the development of freedom and discipline is to achieve the purpose of the subject and achieve the satisfaction of the subject.The interpretation of freedom and discipline in the philosophical context is universal,but in the specific context of education,specific analysis is needed.This paper combines the analysis of freedom and discipline in Whitehead’s philosophical context with the discussion of freedom and discipline in education,and sorts out the contents of freedom and discipline education in education.Freedom and discipline in education refer to the degree of students’ autonomy,the scope of learning and the way of dealing with knowledge.The purpose of education is to cultivate people with both professional knowledge and wisdom.Freedom and discipline can stimulate students’ interest,improve learning efficiency and promote the application of knowledge.Freedom and discipline education can be realized by setting three courses: literature course,science course and technology course,following the principles of relevance,balance and rhythm,and cultivating students’ adventurous spirit.The meanings of freedom and discipline in the philosophical context are universal,but in the specific context of education,specific analysis is needed.Therefore,this paper combines the analysis of freedom and discipline in Whitehead’s philosophical context with Whitehead’s exposition of freedom and discipline in education,dissects the connotation of freedom and discipline in education,and sorts out the purpose,function,principle,implementation path of freedom and discipline education thought and its relationship with Whitehead’s education thought,aiming at making Whitehead’s freedom and discipline education thought more integrated and systematic.Any study of educational thoughts is aimed at deepening the understanding and application of educational thoughts.Different from free education or discipline education in the history of education,Whitehead’s freedom and discipline education is not only an ideal and pursuit of education,but also a norm in education.They are the process that students’ intellectual development must go through,the means for students to increase their experience,cultivate their interest and realize their self-development,the principles to be followed to realize their educational ideals and the way to achieve their educational goals.There is both theoretical possibility and practical necessity for its application in micro-teaching field.In teaching,the determination of the goal should pay attention to students’ subjectivity,the selection of content should follow the principle of relevance,the balance between teaching and learning should be paid attention to,and the rhythm of students’ learning should be mastered in the process.These explorations of the application of freedom and discipline education thoughts can provide a theoretical and practical path for deepening teaching reform in China.
