With the progress of society and the development of medical level, the life expectancy of intellectual disabilities groups is gradually extended. In adulthood, they not only have various physical and mental care needs brought about by their own aging, but also face the realistic dilemma that their caregivers are old and cannot provide continuous care.In the context of the intensified aging of China’s society population, the problem of dual elders in the family of adults with intellectual disabilities is becoming more and more serious. To ensure that adults with intellectual disabilities can continue to maintain their quality of life after their caregivers are interrupted by aging or death, and to improve their families’ ability to withstand unknown potential risks, the need for future planning for this group is more urgent than ever. This study adopts semi-structured interview method and observation method.By interviewing and observing the caregivers of 14 adults with mental disabilities,it aims to explore the future planning of adults with intellectual disabilities and analyze the cognition of caregivers on future planning.situation, attitudes, participation, and understanding of the difficulties carers face in participating in future planning. The results show that,in terms of cognition, caregivers have different levels of cognition about future planning, and it is a consensus to ensure the basic life of the care recipients.Cognitive motivations and cognitive pathways also have different focuses;in terms of attitudes, caregivers have three tendencies: negative, neutral and positive towards future planning.Caregivers are the most involved;in terms of participation, caregivers are most involved in daily care in future planning, followed by medical security, financial planning, emotional care, and housing resettlement, and the least participation is in legal planning. The main reason is that families are faced with the real dilemma of shortage of internal resources and weak social support, resulting in insufficient motivation of caregivers to participate in future planning.Based on the research results, from the perspective of social work, this study explores the feasibility of social work intervening in the future planning of adults with intellectual disabilities, and under the guidance of social support theory, proposes demand-oriented professional services and collaborative multi-subject participation two practical strategies for supporting system construction are involved in future planning issues, aiming to help families of adults with intellectual disabilities to fight for welfare policies, obtain resources, improve planning skills, and do a good job of future planning for the care recipients.
