There emerged an outstanding painter in modern China who threw himself in painting with passion and commitment in the first half of the 20 th century.His name is Liu Kuiling.By imitation and studying,he exploited the legacy left over from traditional Chinese paintings to consolidate involved skills.Meanwhile,he integrated trendy thoughts of contemporary times with conventional artistic forms when painting,thus blending harmoniously oriental and occidental arts thoroughly.Moreover,Liu Kuiling reviewed the flower-and-bird paintings in traditional Chinese style upon which he highlighted images of birds and beasts to make it more expressive with Zeitgeist.Inclusive,diverse,and with innovative aesthetic ideas,his works weeded through the old and brought for the new,making Liu a pioneer in contemporary bird-and-beast-themed paintings.This paper includes the following chapters.The first chapter is the introduction that expounds over the research background,research overview,research methods,research purpose and the meaning of Liu Kuiling's bird-and-beast paintings.The second chapter combs and rounds up images of birds and beasts in traditional Chinese flower-and-bird paintings,elaborating on the application of those images in the pre-Qin period,its evolvement into an independent field in the Tang Dynasty and its development thereafter.All these have paved the way for the exploration of animal images in Liu's flower-and-bird paintings.The third chapter takes Liu Kuiling and Jinmen School as the main thread,focusing on his Jinmen painting community,his artistic ideas,painting styles and related representatives.It also deals with the conditions and local style of the region where Liu lived and did his creation.The fourth chapter analyzes the causes of Liu's artistic style of bird-and-beast paintings and explores the influence of the environment where Liu grew up over the formation of his artistic style by studying such factors as living conditions and education background.In addition,elements like regional culture,historical background,traditional painting,Japanese-style painting,Western painting and other aesthetic ideas are also presenting themselves in his creation,infusing into his works diversified facets.The fifth chapter is key for it further explores the innovation and transformation by Liu under the influence of new-style paintings through contrast between his images of birds and beats on the one hand and those traditional ones on the other.It also analyzes the metaphorical meanings endowed with the images of fauna and flora in Liu's works revolving around skills and coloring features in his animal-themed paintings.The sixth chapter makes an contrastive analysis over Liu's painting style by comparing it with his contemporary counterparts in different regions,such as Lingnan School and Haipai School.The last chapter is conclusive.It's about the writer's reflection on the development of arts and artistic creation gained from personal study of Liu's life and his works with themes of flower-and-bird and bird-and-beast.
