Shi Hua Zong Gui is an important collection of poetic discourses in the Song dynasty, and has documentary value as it draws on a wide range of novels and various kinds of poetic discourses. The number of writings cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui is relatively large, with a total of 27 writings and 195 pieces of material, making it rich in content. As the book was written in the Song dynasty, the content of the quoted writings from the Tang and Fifth Dynasties is relatively close to that of the earlier original books,so the author has chosen to study the writings from the Tang and Fifth Dynasties quoted in Shi Hua Zong Gui.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the status of the compilation of Shi Hua Zong Gui,including the circumstances of the first compiler of Shi Hua Zong Gui,the aims of the compilation, the stylistic features and the origin of the editions of Shi Hua Zong Gui,in order to grasp the general situation of Shi Hua Zong Gui as a whole. The second chapter focuses on the number and content of the writings of the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui.In the author's view, the number of writings from the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui is relatively large, and the content is relatively rich, basically covering most of the categories of Shi Hua Zong Gui,and the subjects of the poems cited are both hierarchical and diverse. The third chapter identifies the differences in the writings of the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui.The author argues that the more detailed accounts of novels and Shi Hua Zong Gui only record poetic events,so the quotations are processed to a certain extent, resulting in differences in detail and omission;the compilers of Shi Hua Zong Gui streamlined the poetic events to the extent that they were not clearly recorded, and there may have been errors in the process of transmission, which may have resulted in differences in the poetic records;Shi Hua Zong Gui was written earlier and the content preserved was more primitive,so there are differences in the wording of the verses and the surviving original Tang and Five Dynasties writings. The earlier publication of Shi Hua Zong Gui and the more primitive preservation of its contents led to discrepancies between the wording of the verses and the surviving original books written during the Tang and Five Dynasties. These discrepancies can be used to understand the original appearance of the text,or for the purpose of proofreading it.The fourth chapter analyses the lost books and the lost sentences cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui.The author finds that there are three lost books among the writings of the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui,namely Lu Huan's Shu Qing Ji,Huang Pu's Min Chuan Ming Shi Zhuan, and Chu Changzi's Xu Ben Shi Shi.These three lost books can be collected through the quotations in Shi Hua Zong Gui.In addition, there are twenty-two lost sentences cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui that are extant in the original books of the Tang and Five Dynasties, which can be used both as a supplement to the extant original books and as a reference for the sentences.Chapter fifth expands on the value and problems of the writings of the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui.In conclusion, the writings of the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui are of great documentary value. The lost writings cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui can be used to supplement the content of lost books and existing original books, and are of historical value. The lost sentences cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui can be used as references to the content of the surviving original books, revealing their value for revision.Although there are problems with the citation of books from the Tang and Five Dynasties in Shi Hua Zong Gui,and with the lack of rigour and precision in the citation of material, the value of the writings from the Tang and Five Dynasties cited in Shi Hua Zong Gui in preserving documents, collecting lost books and lost sentences, and in proofreading texts,is generally worthy of our attention.
