Xu Jin Ping Mei written by Ding Yaokang is one of the most important sequels to Jin Ping Mei.Both Ge Lian Hua Ying and Jin Wu Meng have been deleted and modified based on this novel. The Three Kinds of Jin Ping Mei Sequels published by Qi Lu Press includes these three kinds of books. However,Xu Jin Ping Mei has some defects in structure and thought, and its artistic value is not as high as some scholars have claimed. Therefore,it is necessary to re-evaluate the artistic advantages and disadvantages of Xu Jin Ping Mei in terms of characterization, narrative structure and thought. The paper is divided into six parts including the introduction. The introduction is mainly based on the summary of previous studies,to discover the weak points in the research, formulate research methods, and explain the characteristics and value of this study. The first chapter is mainly to sort out the edition of Xu Jin Ping Mei,and infers the time of its completion based on previous studies, thus concluding that its writing time should be Shunzhi 16 to 17 years. The second chapter mainly discusses the ideological problems, including the concept of comeuppance and the Confucianism?Buddhism?Daoism thought in Xu Jin Ping Mei.On the one hand,Xu Jin Ping Mei inherits the concept of comeuppance in Jin Ping Mei,but on the other hand,it exaggerates it.In Xu Jin Ping Mei,retribution is absolute, which is the precise calculation of heaven. However, the over emphasis on comeuppance also makes the author fall into a contradictory situation. In terms of the relationship among the three religions, although Xu Jin Ping Mei appears to be "combination of three religions",the status of the three religions is not equal.Overall,it is dominated by Buddhism. The third chapter mainly discusses the characterization of Xu Jin Ping Mei,which is divided into two aspects: original characters and reincarnated characters. It can be found that the inheritance of the original characters in Xu Jin Ping Mei is "seemingly in harmony but actually at variance".The characters in the book are flat and conceptualized, which is an illustration of the author's concept of comeuppance. The fourth chapter focuses on the narrative characteristics of Xu Jin Ping Mei.By compared with Jin Ping Mei,it can be found that Xu Jin Ping Mei not only borrowed the narrative art of it,but also made a breakthrough. The breakthrough point lies in the original creation of "plate-style" narrative structure, which is different from the traditional single-line structure and the network structure of Jin Ping Mei.However, the author does not seem to control this structure well, which makes the whole book loose and lacks independence. The postscript part re-discusses the artistic value of Xu Jin Ping Mei based on the previous three chapters, mainly divided into two aspects. From the perspective of Xu Jin Ping Mei as a sequel, the novel does not inherit Jin Ping Mei well in terms of characters and thoughts. It has obvious characteristics of individuality and great independence in thought. From the perspective of Xu Jin Ping Mei as an independent text, there are contradictions and defects in all aspects of thought and art. Therefore, the artistic value of Xu Jin Ping Mei should not be exaggerated.
