Textbooks are an important medium for students to obtain Chinese and also a main source of teaching content for teachers and students in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language,the choice of textbooks directly affects the teaching goal of teachers and the learning effect of students.Vocabulary,as an major part of textbooks,plays a necessary role in evaluating the compilation of textbooks.It is of great significance to explore the rationality and scientificity of the vocabulary compilation in textbooks.As a textbook widely recognized by teachers and students,Developing Chinese has rich achievements in vocabulary researches,but most of the researches focus on a certain kind of words in the textbook,and less on the vocabulary compilation of the whole textbook.Therefore,this paper selects the vocabulary of four volumes in the Elementary and Intermediate Comprehensive Course of Developing Chinese published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press as the research object.Through the research methods on quantitative analysis,qualitative analysis and comparative analysis,it aims to investigate the vocabulary,vocabulary repetition rate,vocabulary definition and explore the characteristics of vocabulary selection and compilation and put forward some reasonable suggestions for the shortcomings of vocabulary compilation in the textbook.This paper discusses the vocabulary in the Elementary and Intermediate Comprehensive Course of Developing Chinese from three aspects,namely:vocabulary,vocabulary repetition rate,vocabulary definition.Research on vocabulary focuses on the total vocabulary of each textbook,the vocabulary of a single class and the coverage rate of the textbook vocabulary in the new syllabus of HSK vocabulary.Research on vocabulary repetition rate focuses on the average repetition rate,special repetition words and repetition intervals.Research on vocabulary definition focuses on the definition model,definition structure and definition methods of glossary definition and footnotes definition.Through the research on the vocabulary in the Elementary and Intermediate Comprehensive Course of Developing Chinese,it is found that in terms of vocabulary,the total vocabulary of the textbook conforms to the standard of the elementary and intermediate textbook,but the vocabulary of some classes is too large,which exceeds the standard of the single class vocabulary,and the textbook vocabulary has a higher coverage for the first to fourth levels of the syllabus while a lower coverage for the fifth and sixth levels.In terms of the vocabulary repetition rate,the average repetition rate of the textbook basically reaches the repetition standard,nevertheless,the actual number of words which reaching the standard of repetition is less,the zeroth repetition words are more,and the repetition interval of some vocabulary is too long or concentrated in the same class.In terms of vocabulary definition,the definition model of glossary is single and the definition structure lacks context.However,footnote definition is more diverse,both the glossary and the footnote adopt a variety of definition methods and follow the principle of applicability.Finally,basing on the above analyses,this paper puts forward some suggestions on vocabulary compilation in the textbooks of Chinese as a foreign language.
