Vocabulary teaching is an important part of English teaching in primary schools. The secondary language knowledge standard in The English Curriculum Standards of the Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)requires primary school students to understand simple spelling rules,to learn vocabulary based on the sound, meaning, and form of words,to learn 600 to 700 words and about 50 idioms concerning the topics in the standard. It can be seen that the national policy requires that primary school vocabulary teaching should help students learn to use spelling rules to learn and recognize English words. However, the current primary school English vocabulary teaching still generally adopts traditional vocabulary teaching method. The method is simple and boring, paying much attention to mechanical imitation and rote memorization and ignoring the correspondence between the “letter” and “sound” of English words. As a result,it may lead to students' inaccurate pronunciation of words, and their lack of confident when they pronounce. They regard word pronunciation, spelling, and memory as burdens and gradually lose interest in English learning. Therefore,it is quite necessary to explore and use effective vocabulary teaching methods that fit the laws of English language and the cognitive characteristics of primary school students.Phonics enables students to pronounce a word when they see it,and to write a word when they hear it by establishing the correspondence between the pronunciation of a letter,or a combination of letters, and the form of a word.In western countries, the study of phonics has a long history and produced numerous studies that have confirmed phonics is an effective tool for children in English-speaking countries to learn English. However, the research on the application of phonics in primary school English vocabulary teaching in China is inadequate. The primary school English teachers ignore the importance of phonics because of their weak phonetic consciousness and inadequate class time. The research applies phonics to primary school English vocabulary teaching,in order to help teachers understand the role of phonics in improving the English pronunciation and spelling ability of primary school students in China. It also explores some effective and operable teaching strategies for the English teachers. The research uses teaching experiment, questionnaire and tests. The experimental subjects of are the students in Class Two and Three of Grade Four at the Phoenix Road Primary School in Jinan High-tech Zone. The Research questions are listed below.1.What is the effect of the application of phonics to vocabulary teaching on primary school students' English phonetic awareness?2.What is the effect of the application of phonics to vocabulary teaching on primary school students' English word reading and spelling ability?3.What is the effect of the application of phonics to vocabulary teaching on primary school students' attitude towards English vocabulary learning? The researcher conducted a careful comparison and analysis of the test results with SPSS.The data were collected from the phonetic awareness test, word reading test and spelling test of the control and experimental classes, with each 30 students.Besides, the data of the questionnaire about learning attitude were analyzed. Then the research found that phonics can improve students' phonetic awareness,as well as their word reading and spelling abilities. In addition, students developed great interest in learning words through phonics. The research suggests that as an effective method of primary school vocabulary teaching, phonics teaching should be further popularized.Relevant experts and educational institutions can develop phonics textbooks and other teaching resources that could be used in foreign language teaching practice.Teachers should expose their students to adequate learning materials and opportunities in this respect. And teachers should explore more phonics learning strategies that could be used in primary school vocabulary teaching.
