The Reckoning English-Chinese Translation Practice Report

The source text(ST)for this report is titled The Reckoning.It is a newsletter about the first school shootings on campus in America.The distinctive linguistic features in the newsletter which are the focus of this study are the uses of direct speech,dash and narratives.Following the Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory as appropriate for the translation of the specific genre at hand,the author uses such strategies as retention,adaptation and amplification to translate the direct speech in the source text.Then,for the translational treatment of dashes in the source text,the author explores the corresponding handling strategies including substitution,amplification,omission,recasting and retention.At last,in the light of Mona Baker's narrative theory and Donald Shaw's agenda-setting of news media studies,the author adopts such strategies as changing order,amplification,omission and adding annotations to carry out study of news narrative translation.All in all,the translation practice report undertakes as its intention to enrich the studies of news reports.
