The distinction between meaning and reference has been one of the important themes in the study of meaning theory since Frege, and the debate about "meaningreference" among linguistic philosophers has continued to this day.The reason why this topic is so active is that the philosophical research conducted around it is not only regarded as the basis for constructing all semantics, but also promotes the understanding and analysis of a series of related core philosophical theories.Frege first clearly pointed out that every sentence and its components(proper name and predicate)have two aspects: sense and reference.Frege opposed equating the meaning of a word with the reference of the word, and believed that the meaning determines the reference.Starting from the concept of knowledge,Frege discussed and proved the difference between the meaning and reference expressed by language, but the theoretical basis of this argument is the true concept of realism, which leads to the difference between Frege's theory of meaning and language prictice is out of touch. Therefore, for truth-conditional meaning theory,it is a theory in which linguistic knowledge is separated from actual language practice. It violates the original intention of meaning theory to describe actual language ability, making it destined to become an infeasible theory of meaning.Based on Frege's thinking,Dummett defended the theory of meaning. He used connotation and reference to criticize Frege-Tarski's classic semantic theory, and proposed "intuitionistic inner interpretation",forming a confirmatory theory of meaning. He took the intuitionist explanation of the meaning of mathematical statements as a starting point and extended it to general language statements, constructing a confirmatory meaning theory with "verification" as the core concept. In the confirmatory theory of meaning, knowing the meaning of a sentence is knowing the conditions under which it is verified. The confirmatory theory of meaning can not only show the speaker's language knowledge, but also combine the speaker's language knowledge with language practice. It is a feasible theory of meaning. From Frege to Dummett, the development of theory of thought shows the cognitive transformation of contemporary theoretical research on meaning. This article starts with Frege's meaning-referential theory, analyzes Dummett's critical views on the theory, analyzes in detail, and then explores the differences between the two theories of meaning, and explores the root causes of such differences,so as to clarify the two the internal development path of meaning theory in order to deepen our understanding of the difference between meaning and reference, and explain the development trend of contemporary meaning theory.
