Death euphemism,as a widely used communication strategy and a ubiquitous linguistic phenomenon in language communication,is not only a type of words commonly used in daily Chinese communication,but also reflects rich connotations such as social culture and values.As a common topic in linguistics,previous studies on euphemism have achieved great results,but there are still very few quantitative analyses of Chinese death euphemism,and studies on the teaching of death euphemisms in teaching Chinese as a foreign language need to be enriched.This paper takes the 481 death euphemisms included in Zhang Gonggui's Chinese Euphemism Dictionary(Beijing University of Language and Culture Press,1996)as the main research data,combined with the research theories of semantics and sociolinguistics.First of all,this paper makes a statistical analysis of the types,formation,and semantic expression of Chinese death euphemism,and makes an overall and detailed description and analysis of death euphemism.Second,it summarizes the pragmatic functions and cultural connotations of Chinese death euphemisms,reflecting the characteristics of Chinese death euphemisms.Then,in combination with the HSK syllabus and grading vocabulary list,and the use of death euphemisms in HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus 2.0,this paper investigates the acquisition of Chinese death euphemisms of foreign students,and finally puts forward some teaching suggestions on the teaching of death euphemisms in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.These death euphemisms express the phenomenon of "death" from different perspectives of rational meaning and associative meaning,which has the function of taboo,politeness,and relief,and reflects the cultural psychology of pursuing good fortune and avoiding disaster,and the value of cherishing life of the Chinese nation.The survey results show that foreign students with intermediate and advanced Chinese proficiency have a sense of using death euphemisms,and have mastered vocabulary knowledge and the ability to understand and use death euphemisms to some extent.But their ability to understand,master,and apply death euphemisms is limited.The Chinese proficiency of foreign students and the time they live in China are positively related to the acquisition of death euphemism,and the level of education has a certain influence on the acquisition of death euphemism of foreign students.Combined with the above findings,the teaching of death euphemism should be appropriately increased in the middle and advanced stage of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The relevant context should be constructed through a communicative approach and task-based teaching methods to help international students improve their general Chinese proficiency and cultural cognition,enhance language communication ability and written expression ability.
