This thesis takes the adverbs in the nine pieces of fairy tales published by Kenji Miyazawa in 1924 and fifteen pieces of fairy tales published in the same year by Mimei Ogawa as the research objects. The adverbs are classified with references to the adverb's semantic function classification standards put forward by Yoshio Nita(2002)and Minoru Watanabe(1983),syntactic function classification standards put forward by Xiaoming Yu(1999).This thesis compares and analyses the semantic and syntactic functions of adverbs in the fairy tales of Kenji Miyazawa and Mimei Ogawa and also explores the characteristics of adverbs in the two authors' fairy tales by using the method of metrological statistics as well as comparative analysis. The conclusions are drawn as follows.(1)Semantic functionThe rank of Miyazawa's adverbs' numbers from high to low is modal adverbs >adverbs of degree and quantities > adverbs of time relationship > adverbs of modality towards events > adverbs of frequency > adverbs of modality towards people >adverbs of results;Ogawa's are modal adverbs > adverbs of time relationship >adverbs of degree and quantities > adverbs of modality towards events > adverbs of frequency > adverbs of modality towards people > adverbs of results. The rank of the classifiers numbers of Miyazawa's adverbs from high to low is modal adverbs >adverbs of degree and quantities > adverbs of time relationship > adverbs of modality towards events > adverbs of modality towards people > adverbs of frequency and adverbs of results;Ogawa's is modal adverbs > adverbs of degree and quantities >adverbs of time relationship > adverbs of modality towards events > adverbs of frequency > adverbs of modality towards people > adverbs of results. The rate of adverbs in each of Miyazawa's works is higher than that of Ogawa, and the average rate is about twice that of Ogawa. The rate of Miyazawa's adverbs of frequency is lower than that of Ogawa, and other kinds of adverbs are higher than Ogawa. The one with the biggest difference is modal adverb. There are little differences between the two authors in the numbers of classifiers of adverbs of results, adverbs of degree and quantities, adverbs of modality towards people. The adverbs in Miyazawa's works are richer.Compared with Ogawa, adverbs make the description of Miyazawa's works more vivid;the description of degree and quantities, time relationship are more specific and precise;the evaluation and attitude and cognition of things are more specific, and the following contents of the sentence is easier to predict. There are little differences between the two authors in the description of results and modality towards people.Ogawa's description of frequency is more specific and precise.(2)Syntactic functionThe syntactic functions of adverbs in the works of the two authors can be used as adverbial, attributive, predicate, and complement. And the rate rank from high to low is adverbial, predicate, attributive and complement. In Miyazawa's works, there are many onomatopoeias syntactically used as independent components, which is a character of Miyazawa's works. There is an object word in Ogawa's works, which is a character of Ogawa. The syntactic functions of adverbs in Miyazawa's works are more scattered, and Ogawa's are more focused on adverbials.
