Implicit negation is a special form of negation, that is,there is no negation mark in form, but the meaning is negation, which is opposite to explicit negation.Implicit negative verbs are verbs that trigger or express negation. This study mainly makes a diachronic investigation of two types of implicit negative verbs in Chinese,"avoid" and "regret",to explore the evolution path and motivation of the implicit negative meaning of these verbs, and focuses on the diachronic changes of these verbs, including lexicalization, grammaticalization, and their special syntactic structure--redundant negation. The study involves involves theories such as lexicalization, grammaticalization, and language redundancy. This paper can be divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction.Firstly,it outlines the background of this topic selection, reviews the relevant research status, discusses the achievements and shortcomings of existing research, and explains the research method and corpus source of this paper. At the same time, the criteria and scope of word selection in this study are expounded.Finally,11"avoid",including bimian(??),fangzhi(??),jinzhi(??),zhizhi(??),zuzhi(??),fangbei(??),fangfan(??),yimian(??),miande(??),shengde(??),nanmian(??),and 6"regret",including houhui(??),fanhui(??),zebei(??),zeguai(??),baoyuan(??),manyuan(??)are determined as the main research objects of this paper.Chapter two and Chapter three discuss the evolution path of the negative meanings of these two kinds of verbs from a diachronic perspective. The second chapter introduces the diachronic evolution of "avoid",inspects the time node of formation and development of these verbs, the time when negative meaning appears, and describes the syntactic and semantic features of the examples. The third chapter introduces the diachronic evolution of "regret".By describing the evolution of these two types of verbs, the path of acquiring implicit negative meaning and the reason of weakening negative meaning of some verbs are investigated. The investigation found that lexicalization is the factor for implicit negative verbs to acquire negative meaning, while grammaticalization is an important reason for the weakening of negative meaning. The fourth chapter attempts to summarize the diachronic development characteristics of these two types of verbs, starting from the parts of speech, word formation, and the acquisition and expression paths of implicit negative meaning, while paying attention to the affirmative and negative forms of these verbs. The affirmative and negative forms of implicit negative verbs have asymmetric forms and meanings. In the course of their historical evolution, the negative forms of implicit negative verbs are mostly expressed as double negative and redundant negative. In Chapter five,we discuss a special syntactic phenomenon, the redundant negation of implicit negative verbs. This Chapter describes the diachronic evolution of the redundant negation of "avoid" and "regret" in detail, focusing on the occurrence and form of redundant negation, the cause and mechanism of this phenomenon, and trying to find the answer to the synchronic difference from a diachronic perspective. The generating mechanism of the negative negation is that the negative semantics of the implicit negative verbs float to the syntactic level, which is manifested as redundant negation marks on the syntactic level.Redundant negation mostly appeared in Pre-Modern Chinese and later.Since Pre-Modern Chinese, the object components after implicit negative verbs have become more and more complex,so it is necessary to have the negative mark to emphasize the speaker's attitude.Redundant negation is not illogical, but cumbersome or overemphasized.Chapter six is the conclusion, summarizing the characteristics of "avoid" and "regret" in the development history of Chinese.
