Data journalism is a hot area in the news communication industry in recent years.Relying on the rapid development and maturity of big data technology, data journalism has gradually become the "new weapon" for news media to cope with the current changes in the communication pattern, and is regarded as an important direction for the development of the news industry in the future.Sports and data have always been inseparable. The emergence and rise of data journalism has also had a huge impact on the way sports journalism is reported. From the perspective of news reports, data mining can expand the forward-looking and macroscopic depth of sports reports. From the perspective of narrative methods, data visualization can revolutionize traditional news narrative methods to achieve all-media,interactive,and gamified sports reports; From the perspective of communication mode, social communication and mobile communication have become new paths for international sports reports. The focus of this article is on the practical research of sports data journalism, and the spatial selection is limited to the data journalism field in China and the United States. This article selects the sports data news produced by the "The upshot" column of the "New York Times" and the sports data news produced by the "Mei Shu Ke" column of "The Paper" as the research objects. It adopts a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research."The upshot" and "Mei Shu Ke" sports data news works are analyzed, compared, summarized, and summarized in terms of topic selection, data acquisition, data visualization, and interaction design. The research results show that there are some differences and gaps in sports data journalism between Chinese and American media mainly in data mining, visualization, content depth, and interactive dissemination, and there are certain commonalities in data sources, news topics, and data processing. Then use field theory to make a deep interpretation of the causes of these similarities and differences. Finally, combined with the lessons learned from the practice of "New York Times" in sports data journalism,it proposes optimization strategies to improve Chinese sports data journalism and promote the development of sports data journalism in China.
