According to the data,by the end of 2019,the total female population in mainland China was 684.78 million, accounting for 48.9%of the total population of the country. The "Healthy China 2030" and the "Outline of Building a Sports Powerful Country"points out that it is necessary to formulate and implement a "physical health intervention plan" for women and other particular groups.Although the number of women sports participants in China has increased compared with that before 2014,this group, nevertheless,is still a minority. Therefore,it has become an important theoretical and practical issue to explore the factors that affect women's participation in sports. From a gender perspective, this dissertation focuses on the causes that affect women's basketball participation, adopting literature research, questionnaire, and interview methods, aiming to improve the proportion of women's participation in basketball and even in other sports. The research process will be followed:firstly, given the realistic background that women are still on the edge of national fitness, the innovations are illustrated by analyzing the purpose and significance.Secondly, the shortcoming of current research is demonstrated through a literature review. The framework and structure, then, are described.Thirdly, the empirical data are collected and analyzed.Furthermore, based on the theory of gender, social representation, and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the causes are discussed that restrict women's participation in basketball in Wuhan, and corresponding solutions are suggested. Finally,a conclusion is drawn. This dissertation contains four aspects, five chapters. The first aspect(Chapter One)demonstrates the research background, research principle, and research methods,by reviewing and summarizing the related literature review. The second aspect(Chapter Two and Chapter Three)describes the group character and tendency of women's basketball participation in Wuhan, demonstrating the factors from three-dimension(individual,basketball,and societal)within the analytic framework. The third aspect(Chapter Four)focuses on the strategy regarding the causes analyzed in the last chapter. The four aspects(Chapter Five)is about the conclusion and the limit of this research. To sum up,the conclusion includes:(1)The group of women's basketball players in Wuhan has the following characteristics:the random and replaceable of participation and the dependence on the organization;the diverse demand on motivation;the influence of gender on the participating behavior;the limited impact of the behavior on the development of women's basketball.(2)The conflict between women's basketball players and traditional gender in representation and femininity affects the participation of female basketball. At the societal level, the public still has a conventional stereotype of the women's players in basketball, which makes this group excluded from the traditional gender norm.Besides, the propaganda of stereotyped female basketball players from the mass media has intensified the public's misunderstanding of the sport and the group. At the individual level, participants need to adjust the conflict between gender identity,self-identity,and the representation and personality of this group. At the basketball level, the existing organizational scale of this sport impedes their exhibition. The limited resource hinders the hosting and promotion of women's basketball games.Furthermore, this sport is devoid of uniqueness and overemphasizes its role in physical exercise, which promotes this sport a substitution.(3)To improve women's participation in basketball, social, basketball, and personal levels should focus on cultivating inclusive gender values and establish a decent representation of them.First, the media need to adjust its contents and ways to reconcile the contradiction between the women's basketball players and the existing gender norms of women.Second, this sport should represent multiple values on spirit and body by innovating the form and value of basketball.Third, sports education is supposed to shoulder more responsibility to cultivate and stimulate the interest of participation by avoiding gender labels in early age.
