In 2017-2018,the author worked as a Chinese teacher at Our Lady's High School in Scotland,she found that the teaching design of Chinese was mainly focus on Comprehensive Course in elementary level,and only several students would choose Advanced Chinese Course in senior phase.Besides,Chinese teaching rhythm was too fast and teaching methods were unsuitable.Thirdly,the classroom layout was not benefit for students' learning.Fourthly,self-editing booklet did not meet teaching needs.Finally,because of the high staff mobility and unclear teaching plan,the teaching content lacked unity and continuity.In order to promote the Comprehensive Chinese Course for Beginners,the author firstly surveyed S1 students' characteristics and learning needs,selected appropriate teaching materials and teaching methods and set a clear teaching plan.Then she carried out the topic-based teaching design of Comprehensive Chinese Course for Beginners and had reflection after class.The survey shows that students have diverse learning motivations,while external mandatory motivations are dominant;Most students hold general attitudes and several hold positive attitudes;Students prefer kinesthetic,tactile and group-based learning styles;Most students hope to use Chinese for daily communication and understand short conversations;Students tend to learn social and cultural themes;Students hope teachers can teach pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar and Chinese characters based on the actual situation,and most of them think learning Chinese character is the biggest challenge;The majority of students hope that the practice time is no more than the teacher's explanation time;Most students hope they can enjoy Chinese movies and songs and participate in competitive games.According to their characteristics and learning needs,the author decided to choose some teaching content from Jin Bu?.She took Communicative Method,Game Teaching Method,Audiolingual Method and Audio-Visual Method as the main teaching approach,and made use of GrammarTranslation Method.Chinese teaching follows the order of “Organizing – Reviewing – Vacabulary teaching – Grammar teaching – Dialogue teaching – Culture introducing – Concluding”.Taking My Little Cat,the second lesson of Unit 2 of Jin Bu I,as an example,the author carried out the teaching design and had reflection.And she believed that the Comprehensive Chinese Course for Beginners could be improved from some aspects:(1)Strengthen classroom management and be strict with students.(2)Master some questioning skills and slow down teaching rhythm.(3)Increase the flexibility of classroom teaching and give judicious guidance according to circumstances.(4)Optimize Chinese language curriculum.(5)Establish a systematic and coherent teaching database and update the content regularly.(6)Conduct self-assessment on a regular basis and reflect on teaching.
