Foreign novel teaching is an important part of Chinese teaching in middle school. It can broaden students' horizons and help them understand different social systems. It can also improve students' ability to distinguish beauty from ugliness, and cultivate their aesthetic interest.Besides,it can enrich students' life experience, enlighten ideas, etc. However,at present,Chinese foreign novel teaching in middle school does not meet these standards.Middle school students lack emotional experience and thinking about classical foreign novels. In the process of teaching, middle school Chinese teachers often confuse foreign novel teaching with Chinese novel teaching, without highlighting the uniqueness of foreign novels themselves. How to interpret foreign novels? How to better achieve the teaching goal of foreign novels? In this context, the theory of narratology in western literary theory has become a breakthrough. The theory of narratology pays great attention to the artistic form of works, and is good at interpreting the elements and narrative characteristics of texts. In view of the current teaching problems of foreign novels, this paper introduces the related theories of narratology, hoping to innovate the solidified thinking of teachers and students in interpreting foreign novels, and provide them with a new way of thinking.Starting from the text, this paper pays attention to the text structure and narrative details, and understands the works through the narrative form of the text, rather than just staying on the three elements of traditional novels to analyze and comb the text.Apart from the introduction, the article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter analyzes the current situation of foreign novel teaching in middle school. From the two perspectives of the selection and compilation of foreign novels in Chinese teaching materials in middle school and the current situation of foreign novel teaching, this part expounds the rationality and feasibility of introducing narratology by presenting the existing problems in foreign novel teaching. The second chapter introduces the important significance of narratology in middle school novel teaching.First,it introduces the basic concepts and main points of narratology;secondly,it seeks the coherence point of using narratology to explain middle school foreign literature;thirdly,it analyzes the significance and value of introducing narratology into foreign novel teaching. The third chapter combines narratology with the specific texts of foreign novels, and it uses narratological knowledge to analyze the texts of foreign novels, and analyze and interpret foreign novels. The forth chapter discusses the issues that should be paid attention to when introducing narratology theory into foreign novel teaching. For example,we should combine foreign novels and traditional novel teaching methods, and the introduction of narratology must be modest. We should also notice the integrity while combining theory and text.Besides, the method of narratology should be combined with the teaching of writing. The innovation of the article lies in the introduction of narrative theories and methods into fiction teaching in middle school. This article aims to solve problems such as students' lack of emotional experience in foreign fiction learning, teachers' failure to achieve foreign fiction teaching goals, and subjective and superficial interpretation of foreign fiction and so on,hoping to provide a new idea and new method for the teaching of foreign novels in middle schools.
